Default BSN News: A FIBA Lesson.

This is the main reason leagues affiliate themselves with a national governing body of basketball and FIBA.

Aaron McGhee who was a center for the Ponce Lions in the BSN walked out from the team yesterday as he and his agent wanted more money from the team.

It was found that Mr. McGhee and his agent were illegally contacting a team in the Philippines and when the philippino team contacted us we found out about this.

McGhee was confronted about this and immediately wanted 15 thousand dollars more to his current contract to stay.

He has been suspended without pay from the team and also his rights as a player are still going to be kept, therefore not allowing him to play in the Phillipines.

McGhee's contract was of 80 thousand dollars with a per diem, housing and transportation.

The Phillipino team would give him 95 thousand.

Now due to the unethical moves by Mr. McGhee and his agent the BSN will ban Mr. McGhee from 1 year (1 calendar year starting from February 28th) to even lifetime banishment from the league. Second the Lions and the BSN will file with FIBA a grievance and a detaining order for Mr. McGhee in which he will not be allowed to play for any FIBA League due to breach of contract and for speaking to another team without the team , FIBA the and leagues permission, which FIBA Americas has already said once these two things are filed it will be approved.

The only way Mr. McGhee will be allowed to play in the Phillipines will be as follows.

Mr. McGhee pays back the monies that have been paid already to him for 4 weeks which was 16 thousand dollars, and 6 thousand dollars in per diem and transportation costs. which will add to 22 thousand and the phillipino team pays the remainding amount of his contract to the Lions which would be 58 thousand dollars.

The Second option is for the team to pay the lions the amount of 64 thousand dollars. but Mr. McGhee will be banned from playing in any FIBA Americas league even at NBA summer leagues or camps until he pays back the Lions 16 thousand dollars.

Third option is that the team pays the full amount of his contract which is 80 thousand dollars and Mr. McGhee's FIBA Ban is lifted although the BSN will suspend him for a year to life.

This is why leagues are affiliated with a national governing body of basketball and then that body is affiliated with FIBA.

FIBA Protects the owners and players. In this case its protecting a team and potentially two teams.

Oh and if Mr. McGhee ends up going to the Phillipines and pulls that stunt on then he will be suspended by FIBA for one whole year.

So some basketball leagues sign their players to contracts... and enforce those contracts.

Joe Newman would call that mean-spirited.

Seriously, this player signed a contract freely, then tried to jump the contract, THEN tried to hold the team up for more money? Wow... BSN may not be major-league basketball, but this guy is major-league dumb.

Are both the CBA and PBL are apart of FIBA? Or is just the CBA currently? But the PBL did have a team in a FIBA tourney, so does anyone know for sure?

He tried to do an ABAish move to a league thats been around for 80 years doing things right. Now he's gotten bit.

80 thousand dollars being paid from January to May was not bad at all, along with the perks that were given to him.

God, and this idiot stood at one of my homes for free. Oh well. Good riddance

CBA is part of USA Basketball which is governed by FIBA Americas which is a continental part of FIBA. The PBL is on a probation period with USA Basketball to get membership to USA Basketball and to the FIBA World.

Both leagues have to comply with FIBA Regulations. Which are many but very simple

Example: No basketball court shorter than the FIBA standard of 91 feet 10 inches.

Default Question

If this were FIFA (football, or as they say here soccer), team A in country B wants player C under contract to team D in country E, said team A would pay team D a transfer fee and all would be happy. Is that an option under FIBA?

Under breach of contract no. The player has to pay back the money he was already paid for or the team has to pay that money and the rest of the money of his contract to the team that player was part of.

Aaron McGhee needed to do things right. FIBA does transfers when team A wants player in team B from other countries as long as its done this way.

Player & Agent contract team B and say he would like to go play somewhere else. Team B then lets FIBA Know. Team A contacts team B in regards of contract. Team B agrees to contract. Team A sends contract to their Local FIBA Region Office. FIBA Region Office signs off and sends it to the next FIBA Region where the player is at. That Region signs off and hands it over to the team the team then signs off and a wire transfer happens from team A to FIBA, FIBA checks the funds and sends to team B. Then the transfer letter goes from team to FIBA, FIBA ratifies it and hands it over to the new team.

Aaron McGhee broke contract when he went behind the teams back and the team in the Phillipines told us about it since they can be fined big time by FIBA if they signed him.

Now in the case of your question.

Marcus Fizer. He played for the Arecibo Captains a week before the season ended Maccabi Tel Aviv contacted the Captains along with Fizer and his agent about signing a contract with them for the 2007-2008 season.

Arecibo agreed towards a 10% payoff which was of 150k for allowing Fizer to sign with Maccabi and Maccabi then allowed Marcus to finish the season with the Captains. If Marcus would have signed after the BSN Season was over and done with Maccabi Tel Aviv would have still had to pay the Captains 150k because the player is under contract until December 31st.

In FIBA teams make money always in regards of transfers. ABAish antics are not to happen and when they do people, teams or even countries can lose their FIBA Rights and losing FIBA Rights means no participation in international events and for players no play in FIBA leagues in general depending on what you did.

To add more info to this.

The grievance has been filed by BSN and the team to FIBA Americas, FIBA Americas has sent the grievance to FIBA and FIBA Americas will now take statements from all parties involved and from the phone recordings that were taken.

The Lions are right now filing a lawsuit against Mr. McGhee and are looking to recover the monies spent if for some odd reason FIBA denies the claim which FIBA Americas has told us they wont, but its always a good measure to go to court and do it legally also.
