Default June 29 - Islanders vs Impact [R]

Islanders surrender in stoppage time
Islanders 0:1 Impact

Montreal – Friday June 29th. The Orange Troops suffered their first defeat under ‘General’ Clarke’s command when they surrendered the game’s only goal to Montreal in stoppage time in the final minutes of the match at Claude Robillard Sports Complex.

After 90 minutes of regulation time, of an overall even game between both teams, the game was a technical 0:0 draw until the 3rd minute (of 4 in stoppage time) when the Gatti and Ribeiro duo penetrated a weakened Islanders defence and made it look all too easy to score against St. Josh (Saunders).

On the play, defender Simon Gatti made a pass to Antonio Ribeiro, who took his time to control the ball at the top of the box before taking a low, diagonal shot 18 yards away to beat the Puerto Rican goalkeeper on his right. It was Ribeiro’s first goal of the season, and Gatti’s first assist this year.

Newly acquired defender Lars Lyssand had 3 shots against his former Montreal team, including a hard left-footed strike on the 78th minute from 30-yards away that brushed the outside of the net.

It was the first game for former Islanders’ Alen Marcina against Puerto Rico. The 2006 Islanders’ goal leader had only a Foul to show for his numbers, and was substituted 20 minutes into the 2nd half by Montreal’s Captain Mauro Biello, who missed the last seven games for the Impact after suffering a thigh injury during the home opener against the Seattle Sounders, on May 20.

Josh Saunders faced 6 shots, and made 1 save. Josh now has 50 saves this season, and is in 4th place in saves in the USL-1, chasing the league’s leader Rochester’s Chase Harrison who has 61.

This was Terry Boss’, the Puerto Rican backup goalkeeper, last regular season game with the Islanders. Boss will be on loan to the Charlotte Eagles in the USL-2 for the rest of the Islanders regular season and will return to Puerto Rico for the USL-1 league playoffs. USL-2 Baltimore Crystal Palace’s Michael Behonick will replace Boss as the Puerto Rican backup goalkeeper for the rest of the USL-1 regular season.

In front of a season record crowd of 12,844, Montreal ended a four-game home winless streak and is now in 3rd place of the USL-1 standings, only two points away from the first place Whitecaps.

The loss is Puerto Rico’s 4th in the season, their 2nd on the road. The Orange Troops now have a 3-6-4 record. Puerto Rico is in 9th place with 15 points, 10 points behind Vancouver.

The Islanders are now 2-3-1 under the command of the Irish “General” Colin Clarke, who took the helm of the team on May 26th.

With this loss, the Islanders are now 0-2-1 this season against Canadian teams; after drawing Montreal 1:1 on May 11th and the Vancouver Whitecaps 0:0 on June 24th, both ties at Juan Ramón Loubriel in Bayamón.

The Islanders are still winless all time against the Impact; and now have a 0-3-8 lifetime record against Montreal. The Impact have shutout Puerto Rico 7 times in 11 games and have outscored the Puerto Ricans 15-4.

The Islanders will next play the Charleston Battery 3 times in a row in July, on the 7th, 13th &15th. The game on July 15th will be the Islanders 100th game in the USL-1 since they joined the league in 2004. Puerto Rico has a 5-4-1 record lifetime against Charleston and has outscored the Battery 11-6 in 10 games.
