Z's route Royals 15-6 in series finale
June 4, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
After scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, the Omaha Royals seemed destined for a big night.
But in the bottom of the first, momentum swung the way of the New Orleans Zephyrs, who scored seven runs in the bottom of the first, en route to a 15-6 win on 90s night at Zephyr Field.
"The first inning was great for us," Zephyrs manager Edwin Rodriguez said after Friday's win. "The momentum was all on (Omaha's) side in the top of the first, but scoring seven runs right away was the key for us."
In the bottom of the first inning, the Zephyrs sent eleven to the plate, scoring seven runs and charting seven hits. The first four hitters reached base via hits and after two consecutive outs, the Z's keep the hitting going.
Scott Cousins notched a two run double, Brad Davis reached first base on catchers interference and Gookie Dawkins and Emilio Bonifacio laced back-to-back two run hits.
The seven runs in the bottom of the first marks a new season high for runs in an inning by the Zephyrs.
In the bottom of the second, the Z's continued their hit parade, sending seven to the plate and plating three runs.
New Orleans then added two in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to secure a 15-6 victory.
For the Zephyrs, every batter in the starting lineup charted at least one base hit and a run scored, as catcher Brad Davis led the way, going 3x4 with a home run, five RBI and two runs scored.
Second baseman Danny Richar went 4x5 with three runs scored, becoming just the second Zephyr of 2010 to notch four hits in a game.
Bonifacio, Logan Morrison, Hector Luna, Richar, Scott Cousins, Davis and Dawkins all charted multi-hit games for NOLA, as the Z's landed a season-high 19 hits.
The 15 runs by NOLA marks a franchise high for runs scored at home, matching the 15 charted against Iowa on June 12th, 2006.
Zephyrs starter Brad Stone improved to 3-1 on the year, allowing six earned runs over five innings. Omaha starter Phillip Humber dropped to 4-4 in 2010, allowing 12 runs, nine earned, over four innings of work.
The Z's now embark on a four-game road trip at Iowa before returning home to host the Round Rock Express. Tomorrow's game against the Cubs will feature southpaw Hunter Jones (0-4, 4.05) for New Orleans and righty Mitch Atkins (3-2, 2.79) for Iowa.
