Zephyrs Win 7-2 over Redbirds in Rain-Suspended Contest

June 10, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) - Memphis Redbirds News Release

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The New Orleans Zephyrs scored five runs in the top of the 12th inning to hand the Memphis Redbirds a 7-2 come-from-behind, rain-suspended defeat in extra innings at AutoZone Park.

Reliever Nick Greenwood gave up a Bryan Petersen RBI single and Nick Green three-run triple before the game was sent into a rain delay at 10:38 p.m. in the top of the 12th inning with the Zephyrs leading 6-2 on April 10. The game sent into suspension after a 39-minute delay and resumed on June 10.

After resumption with Green on third and one out, Jordan Brown hit a sacrifice fly on the first pitch from Eric Fornataro to push the lead to 7-2. The Redbirds were retired in order to end the game.

Dan Jennings (1-1) was credited with the win with two scoreless. Greenwood (0-2) was charged with the loss after five runs in 1/3 of an inning.

John Gast tossed six scoreless frames of four-hit ball with five strikeouts for a no-decision. The left-hander has yet to give up a run through 11 innings in his first two starts.

Kolten Wong singled to extend his hitting streak to seven games to open his Triple-A career. Brock Peterson went hitless to snap his 15-game hitting streak dating back to August 26, 2012.

Oscar Taveras gave the Redbirds a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. With Adron Chambers on third base due to a walk and fielding error, Taveras lined Brad Hand's offering to right field for the game's first run and his first Triple-A RBI.

Redbirds catcher J.R. Towles extended the Redbirds lead to 2-0 with a solo homer to left field in the seventh inning off Rett Varner. The long ball was Towles' first of the season and first since July 15, 2012 vs. Toledo.

Memphis reliever Victor Marte blew his third save in three chances as New Orleans scored two runs in the top of the ninth. With one out, Marte surrendered four consecutive singles, highlighted by Brown and Jake Jeffries RBI singles.

Sam Freeman and Eduardo Sanchez each tossed two scoreless innings.
