Zephyrs Take Down Sounds for Fourth Consecutive Win

NASHVILLE - The Zephyrs sent ten batters to the plate in the fifth inning scoring six runs and rallied to defeat the Nashville Sounds 8-6 in front of a sell-out crowd in Tennessee. The Zephyrs have won four in a row and six of their last seven games and have pulled within three and a half games of first place.

The Sounds scored three early runs to take control of the game. New Orleans starter Jeremy Guthrie allowed 12 hits and four runs in five innings pitched.

Nashville starter Chris Smith allowed one hit through the first four innings and had delivered seven strikeouts. In the fifth inning Smith struggled and allowed five hits including three doubles and a triple.

Joey Wendle drilled a two run home run for Nashville in the seventh inning and the Sounds pulled within a run. The Z's added an insurance run in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly from Matt Juengle

Brian Ellington walked the leadoff batter in the ninth but then sent Nashville down in order with three consecutive strikeouts to finish off his second save.

The Sounds out-hit the Zephyrs 14-11 in the game. Nashville was 3 for nine with runners in scoring position and the Zephyrs were four for fourteen.

The Zephyrs improve to 43-44 on the season and the Sounds fall to 48-42.

GAME NOTES

The Zephyrs improve to 12-3 all time at First Tennessee Park; the Zephyrs have won six of seven games in the Nashville ballpark this season.

The Zephyrs won a game for the first time this season when trailing by three or more runs.

The Z's added infielder Pedro Ciriaco. He was acquired in a trade from the Texas Rangers for Eric Jokisch on Friday. The Zephyrs placed pitcher Dylan Axelrod on the disabled list.

ON DECK

The Zephyrs continue their series in Nashville on Sunday at 1PM. New Orleans will start RHP Asher Wojciechowski (2-3, 6.30) against LHP Dillon Overton (9-4, 3.01).

NEXT HOME GAME

The Zephyrs open an eight game home-stand next Thursday, July 14th against the Class AAA Houston Astros the Fresno Grizzlies.
