Zephyrs Strike Early, Hold off I-Cubs 7-5
April 19, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Destin Hood's three-run homer in the first helped the Zephyrs build a 6-0 lead after three innings, and New Orleans fended off the Iowa Cubs, 7-5 on Tuesday night at Zephyr Field.
Hood's blast was his third of the year and gave him 13 RBI, tied for second-most in the Pacific Coast League.
The Zephyrs added to their lead an inning later when Kenny Wilson ripped a two-run double into the left field corner, and extended their lead to 6-0 in the third after Hood reached on an error and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Robert Andino.
Iowa inched back within 6-2 in the fourth on a pair of sacrifice flies to cash in a leadoff double by Arismendy Alcantara and a one-out double by Dan Vogelbach.
The Z's got a run back in the bottom of the frame after Wilson drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored when Vogelbach allowed Don Kelly's grounder to slip through his legs for Iowa's second error.
The I-Cubs sent eight batters to the plate in the sixth inning to chase Z's starter Paul Clemens from the game. Clemens issued back-to-back walks with one out, and Albert Almora followed with a run-scoring single off Brian Ellington, one of three hits on the night for Almora.
Ellington walked Ryan Kalish to load the bases, then hit Kristopher Negron with a pitch to force in a run. A ground out by Logan Watkins plated the third run of the inning before Ellington struck out pinch hitter Matt Murton to escape further damage.
Eric Jokisch, claimed off waivers from the Cubs last week, tossed two scoreless innings against his former club, and Andre Rienzo worked around a pair of singles in the ninth to strand the tying run on base and secure his second save.
Clemens (1-2) was charged with four runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings to pick up his first win of the year. Scott Barnes (1-2) lasted just two innings in an emergency start, allowing five runs and six hits in the loss.
The Zephyrs and I-Cubs continue the series on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
