Zephyrs Slowed by Salt Lake

May 9, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) - New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Kip Wells limited New Orleans to only a first-inning run on Thursday night, and snapped the Zephyrs' win streak at three games as Salt Lake took a 2-1 win at Zephyr Field.

The Zephyrs still have not had a winning or losing streak of longer than three in a row this season.

Working deliberately, Wells kept the Zephyrs off balance through his five innings of work to pick up his first win of the season. The 36-year-old veteran had allowed 10 runs and 13 hits in six innings over his first two starts of the year, but gave up only a first-inning run to the Z's on Thursday when Gorkys Hernandez led off with a single, moved to third on an Ed Lucas single and scored on Jordan Brown's sacrifice fly.

The Bees had grabbed a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the first after just two batters, when Trent Oeltjen doubled, stole third and scored on a single up the middle by Roberto Lopez.

Salt Lake quickly took the lead again in the top of the second, capitalizing on a pair of walks issued by Zephyrs starter Duane Below to lead off the frame. Brad Hawpe and Bill Hall drew free passes, and Matt Downs threw wildly to first on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Matt Young, allowing Hawpe to score. Below limited the damage by getting Jimmy Swift to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

Below (2-1) also worked around a leadoff double by Efren Navarro in the fourth, and retired the last eight batters he faced with runners in scoring position, but still suffered his first loss as a Zephyr. The left-hander gave up five hits and two runs - one earned - in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out one and walked four.

Wells (1-2) combined with three relievers to hold New Orleans hitless into the ninth inning after Wilson Valdez's two-out single in the second.

Robert Coello set down the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth before Valdez doubled off the left field wall, narrowly missing a game-tying home run. Coello then fanned Hernandez for the final out, preserving his fourth save of the year.

New Orleans and Salt Lake wrap up the four-game set on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
