Zephyrs Fall in Opener to Cubs

May 3, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) - New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

An attempt at late-inning heroics fell short on Monday night, as the New Orleans Zephyrs dropped the opener of a four-game set to the Iowa Cubs, 3-2.

Cubs starting pitcher Casey Coleman (2-2) tossed seven innings while surrendering one run on four hits. Coleman also helped pitched in at the plate, going 2-for-2 with an RBI.

New Orleans starter Brad Stone (0-1) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three. Z's relievers A.J. Battisto, Jay Buente and Brett Sinkbeil combined for three innings without allowing an earned run, as the Cubs' winning run was plated on a throwing error by shortstop Donnie Murphy in the eighth.

Down 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Iowa reliever Jeff Samardzija allowed back-to-back singles, walked Lee Mitchell and hit Murphy with a pitch, scoring Jason Lane and pulling the Z's to within one run. But Cubs reliever Brian Schlitter slammed the door, retiring pinch hitter Brad Davis for the final out.

Game two of the four-game tilt is on Tuesday morning from Zephyr Field. The Z's Rick VandenHurk (1-2, 6.55) will oppose Iowa's Mike Parisi (0-2, 9.00) with first pitch is scheduled for 11:30 am.
