New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Sean West hurled six scoreless innings and Mike Cervenak went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer to lead the New Orleans Zephyrs past the Iowa Cubs, 4-0 on Friday night.

The Zephyrs earned their league-leading eighth shutout.

New Orleans struck early when Tim Torres, who reached base in all four of his at-bats, led off the first with a walk and stole second.

Vinny Rottino smacked a RBI double down the left field line to score Torres.

West (3-5) cruised past the Cubs, pitching six innings, giving up no runs on two hits while striking out three in becoming the first Zephyrs starter to earn a win since Chris Sampson beat Round Rock on June 23.

The Z's struck again in the fifth when Torres led off the inning with a walk, followed by a Joe Thurston single.

Cervenak knocked in Torres with an RBI single to make it a 2-0 game.

New Orleans put the game out of reach in the seventh when Cervenak struck again, this time with a two-run home run to go ahead 4-0.

Corey Madden took over for West, and struck out five in two innings of relief.

Pete Andrelczyk closed the door on the Cubs in the ninth, sitting them down in order to secure the victory.

Jay Jackson (4-8) took the loss for Iowa, giving up two runs on seven hits while striking out eight in six innings.

The Zephyrs return to action on Saturday night at 6 p.m. for game three of the four-game set against the Iowa Cubs. Chris Sampson takes the mound for the Z's as he faces off against Austin Bibens-Dirkx.
