Zander Wiel Named MWL and Twins Player of the Week

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Midwest League and MiLB.com announced today that Kernels infielder Zander Wiel has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week for the period ending July 17th.

In six games last week, Wiel hit .458 (11-24) with four doubles, five home runs, 12 RBI and seven runs scored. He is the Kernels team leader in HR (10) and RBI (52) and was selected by the Twins in the 12th round of the 2015 First Year Player Draft out of Vanderbilt University.

Earlier today, the Minnesota Twins announced that Wiel was named their organizational Minor League Player of the Week for the same period.

Quad Cities pitcher Jose Hernandez was named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for the same period.

Wiel is the third Kernel this season to receive Midwest League weekly honors, joining Fernando Romero and A.J. Murray who were named MWL Pitcher and Player of the Week on May 16 and May 22 respectively.

The Kernels wrap up a six game road trip tonight at 6:05 PM in Fort Wayne. They return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, July 20th to open a six game home stand against Bowling Green and Dayton.
