South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Hershey Bears, announced Tuesday the reassignment of forward Kelly Zajac and defenseman Cody Corbett to South Carolina.
Zajac began the year with the Stingrays and was the team's leading scorer with 46 points (10 goals, 36 assists) through 48 games at the time of his recall to Hershey on Feb 16. While with the Bears, Zajac was very productive, scoring seven points (four goals, three assists) in nine games, while helping Hershey to a 7-2 record.
The Winnipeg, Man. native is in his second year with the Stingrays after joining the team midway through the 2015-16 season. The forward put up 22 points (nine goals, 13 assists) in 21 regular season games last season before becoming a force in the playoffs with 18 points (three goals, 15 assists).
Corbett was acquired by the Washington Capitals in exchange for goaltender Joe Cannata in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche on March 1. Previously, the 23-year-old's season has been split between the AHL's San Antonio Rampage and the ECHL's Colorado Eagles. With the Rampage, Corbett registered 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in 23 contests and had five points (two goals, three assists) over seven games with the Eagles.
A native of Lakeland, Minn., Corbett stands at 6-foot-1, 194-pounds and has appeared in 93 career AHL games during three professional seasons. Before turning pro, Corbett played with the WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings for three seasons, leading the club to two WHL Championships (2011-12, 2013-14) and a Memorial Cup title in 2013-14. Corbett is expected to wear jersey No. 26 with the Stingrays.
South Carolina returns to the ice on Saturday night against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at 7:05 p.m. inside the North Charleston Coliseum.
