Midland RockHounds News Release
The two newest members of the RockHounds pitching staff led the club to a 2-1 win over Tulsa on Friday night. Joey Wagman and Kyle Finnegan scattered nine hits and, backed by a very solid defense, kept the Drillers at bay after Matt Chapman's RBI single broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth.
Wagman, making his third start of the season for the 'Hounds, pitched into the seventh. The last batter he faced, Lars Anderson, was the first man that Wagman walked over his 6.1 innings (he struck out three). Finnegan came out of the bullpen and ended the one-out threat with one pitch when Paul Hoenecke bounced into a 5-4-3 double play (the RockHounds went around the horn to end both the sixth and seventh).
Tulsa starter Brock Stewart was "as good as advertised," entering ... and exiting ... the game with a 1.25 ERA and a strikeouts-to-walks ratio of nearly six-to-one. Stewart pitched into the eighth, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, with no walks and nine strikeouts.
The teams traded runs in the fourth, with Tyler Marincov driving in Brett Vertigan with a single to right in top half of the inning, and the Drillers answered on Jacob Scavuzzo's RBI single to left, scoring Willie Calhoun with the tying run, in the home half of the frame.
Vertigan led off the sixth with a "Rembrandt" of a bunt, one that rolled to a stop on the edge of the third base chalk line. Hoenecke's brilliant diving stop at the bag at third turned Yairo Munoz's would-be double down the line into an infield single, but Chapman followed with a broken-bat (shattered is more like it) single to left, bringing Vertigan in with what would be the game winner (Vertigan scored both of the club's runs and added a stolen base). Finnegan pitched the last 2.2 innings for his first Double-A save (the second of his career overall).
