York Revolution News Release

York, Pa. - Travis Witherspoon sparked a pair of three-run innings and James Simmons took care of the rest as the York Revolution beat the New Britain Bees 6-1 on Friday night at PeoplesBank Park. The Revs (3-5, 43-35) came back strong from the All-Star Break, keeping the Bees (3-5, 39-39) at an arm's length all night in a game that was never in doubt.

The Revs got to Bees pitcher Kyle Simon, who came in with a sub-2.00 ERA, in the second inning. Andres Perez led off with a double and went to third on a Kevin Rivers single. Michael Rockett then smacked a comebacker and Perez was caught in a rundown, eliminating the lead runner but saving York an out on a tailor-made double play ball.

Josh Wilson slashed a double to right off the mitt of Anthony Hewitt, allowing Rivers to score to make it 1-0. After a strikeout, Witherspoon came up to face the man who struck him out in Wednesday's Atlantic League All-Star Game. Witherspoon got his revenge in a big way, launching a liner that one-hopped the wall. Both runners came in on the two-out, two-run triple as the Revs put up a three-spot in the frame.

"When I saw [center fielder Michael] Crouse turn his head and go after it, I knew it was in the gap," said Witherspoon. "I knew it was time to jet."

Witherspoon sparked another rally in the fifth, leading off with a single. He then proceeded to get into Simon's head, forcing a bad pickoff throw that resulted in a two-base error. Jared Mitchell missed a home run by inches, bouncing an RBI double off the top of the left center wall to bring in Witherspoon. Michael Burgess left no doubt with his blast, conking a two-run homer off the carousel in left center for his seventh home run and a 6-0 York lead.

The six-run cushion was more than enough for Simmons (7-3), who methodically sat down the Bees through seven shutout innings. He allowed just four singles and walked one while striking out a season-high nine. Simmons found his groove of grooves in the middle innings, retiring 12 New Britain batters in a row between the second and sixth frames.

Tiring in the seventh, Simmons gave up a leadoff single to Craig Maddox before striking out Jonathan Roof and Greg Golson. Crouse then drew the only walk of the game to put Simmons in his lone jam. The California-bred righty then dug deep against Jon Griffin, striking him out on his 101st pitch to complete the spectacular seven.

Simon (4-3) saw his ERA balloon from 1.97 to 2.66 after allowing six runs on 11 hits in five innings.

The Bees broke up the shutout off of Manny Corpas in the eighth as Jake McGuiggan plated Anthony Hewitt on a groundout. Julio DePaula then powered through a scoreless ninth to lock down the win.

Witherspoon led the way for the Rev bats, going 3-for-4 with a triple, run, and two RBIs. Rivers also went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run.

Hewitt doubled in the eighth for New Britain's only extra-base hit of the night.

Notes: Simmons' seven wins tie him for most in the Atlantic League. Witherspoon has hit safely in 20 of his first 24 games with York, batting .343 (37-108) over that span. Mitchell's fifth-inning double extends his hitting streak to eight games (12-34, .353). In his first four home games, Rivers is 9-for-16 with five doubles, two triples, and four RBIs. York's Frank Gailey (2-2, 3.25) will square off with New Britain's Brian Dupra (4-1, 3.67) on Saturday night. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 6:10 p.m. with Darrell Henry and Will DeBoer on the call. Saturday night marks the return of the ZOOperstars presented by Penn-Mar Human Services to PeoplesBank Park. Regular Saturday night fare of Rost Brothers BBQ and postgame inside-the-park fireworks presented by York Traditions Bank are also set to go. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at yorkrevolution.com, on the phone at (717) 801-HITS, or in person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
