Hartford Yard Goats News Release

Richmond, VA- The Hartford Yard Goats were shutout by the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-0 on Thursday night at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia. Richmond starter Matt Gage hurled a nine inning complete game shutout in the rubber game of the three game series. The lefty retired 18 of the first 21 batters faced and allowed only five singles in his first complete game of the season. Richmond scored a pair of runs in the first inning off Yard Goats starter Luis Niebla and cruised behind Gage. Gage also cracked a double off the left field fence in his final at bat in the seventh inning. Niebla was the tough luck loser but turned in a quality start, allowing three runs in sixth innings of work.

The Flying Squirrels scored two runs in the first inning off Luis Niebla. Slade Heathcott, Daniel Carbonell and Miguel Gomez all had consecutive singles to load the bases with nobody out. Jerry Sands then hit into a double play scoring Heathcott and gave Richmond a 1-0 lead. C.J. Hinojosa followed with a two out single scoring Carbonell and making it 2-0 Flying Squirrels.

Meanwhile, Richmond starter Matt Gage was impressive and retired the side in order in four of the first five innings allowing just one hit, a single and a walk, over that span. The Yard Goats had back to back singles to start the eighth inning but Gage got a double play grounder and escaped unharmed.

Richmond added a run in the fourth inning as C.J. Hinojosa and Hunter Cole connected on back to back doubles, making it 3-0 Flying Squirrels. Niebla pitched six innings and allowed three runs on nine hits. Shane Broyles and Johendi Jiminian finished the game with two scoreless innings of relief.

The Yard Goats open a 3-game weekend series on Friday night at PNG Field in Altoona, Pennsylvania. RHP Yency Almonte will pitch for the Yard Goats while RHP Tanner Anderson will pitch for Altoona. The broadcast can be heard on AM 1410 WPOP or on iheart radio.
