Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, IN - The Gary South Shore RailCats and the American Association of Professional Baseball jointly announced today that the New York Yankees have purchased the contract of infielder Spencer Mahoney. Mahoney becomes the 22nd RailCat to have his contract picked up by an affiliated organization since 2002.

"We are very happy for Spencer. His college career at Valparaiso and in his short time with us certainly showed a bright future," said RailCats Manager Greg Tagert.

Spencer Mahoney joined the RailCats fresh off an outstanding career at Valparaiso University on August 17, 2015 in a trade with the Schaumburg Boomers. With the RailCats during the final full month of the season, Mahoney played in 19 games hitting .267 in 45 at bats adding five RBI.

Mahoney, a LaGrange Park, Ill., native spent four years at Valparaiso University from 2012-15 and was a career .295 hitter with the Crusaders in his four seasons. His best season came his senior year when he hit .326 in 53 games and drove in a career high 28 runs and had three long balls. After graduating from "Valpo," Mahoney was signed by the Boomers where he played in only five games where he went 3-for-14 with a double and two RBIs.

"The signing of Spencer Mahoney adds to the American Association's long standing reputation of producing great talent. It also is a testament to the type of talent Greg Tagert has acquired for our team and the level of talent in our league," added Brian Lyter General Manager of the RailCats.

Mahoney is the first RailCat to have his contract purchased since 2013 when, LHP Clay Zavada was picked up by the San Diego Padres on July 2nd of that season.

2016 will mark the 15th season of RailCats Baseball in Northwest Indiana and season tickets are now on sale. Visit RAILCATSBASEBALL.COM or call (219) 882-2255 for more information.
