Sioux City Explorers News Release

Sioux City, IA - The Sioux City Explorers have acquired the rights of three players from the Winnipeg Goldeyes to complete an earlier trade that sent X's pitcher, Jason Jarvis to Winnipeg in August. The three players are infielders Kevin Moesquit and Nate Samson, and left-handed pitcher Edgar Osuna. The X's gained the revisionary rights of Samson, as he was signed out of Winnipeg by the Chicago Cubs and finished the 2013 season with the Tennessee Smokies, the double-A affiliate of the Cubs.

Moesquit, a 22-year old utility player from Delray Beach, FL, was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2010 in the 17th round. He spent two full seasons with the Angels prior to the 2013 season, making it to their full season single-A affiliate in the Midwest League. He has seen time at six different positions but is primarily a second baseman. Over three years, he has a .976 fielding percentage at second base, committing only 19 errors in nearly 800 chances.

In Winnipeg this season, Moesquit hit .245 in 44 games. He produced 26 runs in 34 hits, including 5 doubles, 1 triple and 2 homeruns. The right-hander struck out 25 times; while coaxing 13 walks from opponents.

Osuna, a 25-year old pitcher from Mazatlan, Mexico, spent seven years in the Atlanta Braves and Kansas City Royals organization before signing with the Goldeyes in 2013. During his time in the farm systems, he made it as high as triple-A. Over his career, mainly as a starter, the left-hander has accumulated a 4.04 earned run average in 122 appearances. He has posted a 38-30 record with 498 strikeouts to 136 walks in 570 innings pitched.

With Winnipeg this past season, Osuna went 3-2 in six starts, while carrying a 3.19 earned run average. He threw one complete game shutout versus the Lincoln Saltdogs on July 30th. In 36.2 innings pitched, he struck out 33 opponents while allowing 16 free passes.

Samson, a 26-year-old from Ocala, FL, was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2006 in the 34th round. He played seven years in the Cubs farm system, making it as high as triple-A. A .261 career hitter, Samson has been a strong defender. Stationed primarily at shortstop, the right-hander sports a .951 fielding percentage, yielding 65 errors in over 1,300 chances.

Samson started the 2013 season with the Winnipeg Goldeyes before having his contract purchased by the Chicago Cubs. The X's gained Samson's revisionary rights, making him Sioux City property if he is released by the Cubs this next year. In Winnipeg, Samson played in 44 games at shortstop, producing a mere four errors in 211 chances.

The Sioux City Explorers also announced they have also completed a late season trade with the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks, which sent Chris Bodishbaugh to the Redhawks in exchange for John Holdzkom and two players to be named later. The X's have received Bodishbaugh back, as well as infielder Ryan Pineda. Pineda spent the 2013 season with the Grand Prairie Airhogs, where he hit .280 in 84 games with 22 doubles and produced 45 runs batted in. In 8 games with the X's, Holdzkom pitched 7.2 innings and struck out 15 batters while not allowing an earned run.
