Memphis Xplorers News Release

SOUTHAVEN --- The Memphis Xplorers of the af2 have been assigned three players by the league office in Chicago. The team has been assigned WR/DB Earven Flowers from Kentucky, WR/DB Jeremiah Mason who split his college career between Northeastern and Syracuse and WR/DB Darrell Dowery from Kent State.

During his four seasons at Kentucky, the five-foot-nine, 193 pound Flowers was a valuable member of the Wildcats' secondary by playing cornerback, safety and special teams. He started at cornerback in his junior and senior seasons and led the team in pass break-ups each season.

"Earven was a productive player in arguably the best conference (SEC) in college football," Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto said. "We believe that Earven's playmaking ability in college should translate into our game."

Mason, six-foot-one-190 pounds, had his college career shortened by injuries. As a freshman at Syracuse, he played in all 12 games and was named a Sporting News Freshman All-American. A foot injury ended his sophomore season after seven games. Mason transferred to Northeastern and played in 11 games his junior year and finished with 26 tackles, five pass break-ups, a forced fumble and an interception. A knee injury prior to his senior season prevented him from playing in 2004.

"Jeremiah was a player that was on a fast track during his college career before being sidelined with a knee injury," Barto said. "We are looking for big things from him this year."

Dowery, six-foot-175 pounds, was the leading receiver for Kent State his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He finished his career with 143 receptions for 1843 yards, a 12.9 yards per reception average and eight touchdowns.

"Darrell was an extremely productive receiver on a team that had a quarterback who is currently playing receiver in the NFL," Barto said. "I believe that he has the opportunity to put up huge numbers for us."

Dowery's quarterback at Kent State was current Cleveland Browns receiver and kick retuner Josh Cribbs.

These assignments give the Xplorers 12 assigned players for the 2006 season.
