Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Asheville, NC - May 11, 2017)- The West Virginia Power edged the Asheville Tourists 2-1 on Thursday night at McCormick Field. Clark Eagan went 2-3, scored a run and drove in the eventual game winner, while the Power pitching staff combined for thirteen strikeouts as West Virginia evened the series at on win apiece.
Asheville started Riley Pint, the second-best prospect in the Colorado Rockies system and West Virginia countered with left-hander Oddy Nunez. In his last appearance, Nunez pitched four perfect innings against Lexington in a no-decision.
The Power took the lead in the top of the second inning. With two down, Eagan reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Pint. Kevin Mahala followed with a double off the 42-foot high wall in right field to drive in Eagan for a 1-0 lead.
West Virginia added a run in the top of the sixth when Carlos Munoz tripled to lead off the inning and scored on two-own single by Eagan. Asheville broke up the shutout bid in the home half of the inning, scoring one run on two hits against reliever Matt Frawley.
Nunez pitched three and two-thirds of shutout baseball, striking out six, but did not factor in the decision. Frawley (2-0) worked two innings, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Blake Cederlind pitched two shutout innings for his first hold and Geoff Hartlieb pitched the ninth for his second save. Pint (1-4) allowed just one unearned run and took the loss for Asheville.
West Virginia concludes a short, three-game road trip on Friday with Luis Escobar on the mound. Asheville counters with Antonio Santos at 7:05 P.M.
