World Bowl foes meet in regular season finale

NFL Europes leading teams will go head to head in Week 10 action as the Berlin Thunder (8-1) plays host to the Frankfurt Galaxy (7-2) just six days before the German rivals clash for the third time in four weeks in World Bowl XII.
Prior to that June 12 championship showdown in Gelsenkirchen, the Thunder and Galaxy will be going all out to head into the title game on a winning note.
Berlin will be gunning to make league history as a victory over Frankfurt in Week 10 would see them tie the 1991 London Monarchs and 1995 Amsterdam Admirals as the only teams to record 9-1 regular season marks.
Sundays action also sees the Amsterdam Admirals (4-5) play host to the Rhein Fire (3-6). With a home win to end the year, the Admirals can post a 5-5 mark, which would bring to a halt a streak of five losing seasons.
The Week 10 action begins on Saturday June 5 as the Cologne Centurions (3-6) visit the Scottish Claymores (2-7) at Glasgows Hampden Park. Both teams will be playing for pride in the season finale.

WITH his team one win away from a place in the NFLEL history books, Berlin Thunder head coach RICK LANTZ is not about to let his World Bowl-bound team rest on its laurels.
He says: We are still on an upward path and our goal is to keep getting better. We hope to do the same next week and then play for all the marbles the week after that.
We enjoyed a real character win coming from behind in Scotland and it was an important game for us because we want to keep this thing going.
In a week when he saw his starting quarterback return to the United States to attend to family matters and three of his top defensive linemen were placed on injured reserve, Galaxy head coach MIKE JONES was full of praise for his team after they ran out 20-14 overtime winners over the Rhein Fire.
He says: When you lose three guys on the defensive front it takes a big bite out of you with all of them coming from the same position. But the defensive linemen played great at Rhein and put forth a real valiant effort.
The later you get into the season, the harder it is to come up with the wins. This victory in tough circumstances was extremely satisfying.
Sundays other game sees the Rhein Fire visit the Amsterdam Admirals. After seeing his team lose for the third week in a row, Fire head coach PETE KUHARCHEK says: It seemed at times like everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Our mistakes really hurt us and you have to give Frankfurt credit they came to play and they had more than us. We will go back this week and work some more to get better.
The Admirals have the chance to reach .500 for the first time since 1998, when they went 7-3.
Head coach BART ANDRUS says: We really went out and played hard and with a lot of heart last week. I would like to carry over the enthusiasm and willingness to work of our guys from last week to this week. I would like them to be determined to finish the season strong.
Kicking off the Week 10 action on Saturday will be the Scottish Claymores and Cologne Centurions, who will both be playing for pride at Hampden Park.
Claymores head coach JACK BICKNELL says: I dont want to feel like this next week. I dont want to go home feeling as bad as I do right now. Im counting on our players to put in a good week of practice and then play well against Cologne.
Centurions head coach PETER VAAS says: This is the end of an emotional year but there were a lot of positives to come out of this season. We are looking forward to playing an improving Claymores team. This is a great group of players I have coached this year.

World Bowl teams to take part in dress rehearsal for title game

THE travel arrangements to Gelsenkirchen have been completed and the team hotels are booked, but before the Berlin Thunder and Frankfurt Galaxy can turn their attention to World Bowl, the German rivals must face off in a Week 10 season finale on Sunday afternoon.
And fans wondering if the game at Berlins Olympic Stadium is little more than a dress rehearsal for the championship showdown six days later would do well to listen to rookie head coaches RICK LANTZ and MIKE JONES, who both want victory in Week 10 to head into World Bowl on a high note.
The Thunder need one more regular season win to tie the best ever marks of 9-1 set by the 1991 London Monarchs and the 1995 Amsterdam Admirals.
Lantz says: We get Frankfurt the next two weeks and we badly want to beat them both times. Our aim ever since we clinched a World Bowl berth has been to get better each week and continue on an upward path.
Jones adds: We have one game left in the regular season so we still have to take care of our game against Berlin before we can start focusing on World Bowl.
Our priority is to take care of business against a good Berlin Thunder team in Week 10.
This weekends game marks the fourth time in NFLEL history that World Bowl teams have met in Week 10. On each other occasion, one of the teams needed to win in order to reach the post-season.
In each previous Week 10 meeting between World Bowl-bound clubs, the winner in the regular season finale has lost in the championship game.

NFLEL FACTS: TD drought ends

WHEN Cologne Centurions German TE Werner Hippler scored on a 4-yard reception in Week 9, it brought to an end a lengthy touchdown drought for the national star. Hippler last scored a TD in Week 10 of the 1995 season while playing for the Frankfurt Galaxy against the Barcelona Dragons. Hippler caught 3 passes for 21 yards vs. Amsterdam his first receptions as a Centurion.

Understudies shine on center stage in NFLEL Week 9 action

WHILE ROHAN DAVEY (New England Patriots) and J.T. OSULLIVAN (New Orleans Saints) have been grabbing the headlines for the Berlin Thunder and Frankfurt Galaxy respectively this season, Week 9 proved both clubs have key depth at the quarterback position.
With OSullivan back in the United States due to a family emergency and with Davey proving ineffective in the first half against the Scottish Claymores, understudies KIRK FARMER (Kansas City Chiefs) and DAVID RIVERS moved onto center stage and shone in the spotlight.
Farmer led the Galaxy to a 20-14 overtime defeat of the Rhein Fire by completing 8 of 20 passes for 127 yards, 2 touchdowns and a 95.2 quarterback rating.
Farmer threw a 37-yard TD pass to TE CHAD HAYES in the first half and then won the game for the Galaxy in overtime with a 32-yard strike to WR DERRICK LEWIS.
Rivers entered the game at Scotlands Hampden Park with the Thunder trailing 13-0 to the hometown Claymores just before halftime.
He sparked the Thunder to life by scoring on a 4-yard quarterback draw and then went on to complete 18 of 24 attempts for 202 yards, 2 touchdowns and a QB passer rating of 127.4.
Thunder head coach RICK LANTZ said: I thought David Rivers played a very good game for us today and gave us the lift we needed to get back into the contest.
I wanted to play our other quarterbacks because I feel we have true depth at that position. I think we have the best three quarterbacks in the league in Rohan Davey, David Rivers and MARC DUNN (Kansas City Chiefs).
Rivers was named NFLEL Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Claymores.

NFLEL FACTS: Record high

THE league-leading Berlin Thunder and Frankfurt Galaxy are guaranteed to go into World Bowl XII in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, on Saturday June 12 with a combined regular season record of 16-4. That would be the best combined record of any two teams in the championship game since the NFL Europe League re-formed in 1995. The previous best in that time was 15-5 in 1995 by the Amsterdam Admirals (9-1) and Frankfurt Galaxy (6-4). The best ever in league history was 17-3 in 1991 (London Monarchs 9-1, Barcelona Dragons 8-2).

Hicks moves closer to single season touchdown record

BY SCORING on a 2-yard run during his teams Week 9 overtime defeat of the Rhein Fire, Frankfurt Galaxy running back SKIP HICKS (Cincinnati Bengals) moved to within 2 touchdowns of tying the single season record of 14 held by LAWRENCE PHILLIPS (Barcelona Dragons 1999).
Hicks has scored an NFLEL-high 12 touchdowns this season (10 rushing, 2 receiving) and has played a key role in the Galaxy reaching World Bowl XII.
In nine games this season, Hicks has rushed for a league-leading 611 yards on 166 carries and also ranks second in NFLEL with total yards from scrimmage (823; 611 rushing, 212 receiving).
Hicks scored 2 touchdowns in the Week 8 meeting with Frankfurt and a repeat performance in Week 10 would see him enter the NFLEL record books.

Record year for close games

EVEN though there are still three games to be played in the 2004 regular season, this year will go down in the record books as having the most close contests in NFL Europe League history.
Following the Week 9 action, 22 of 27 games played this season have been decided by one score or less (8 points). That total surpasses the 20 games decided by one score or less in 1996, which was the previous high in a 30-game regular season (since 1995).

McCready chases club record and a place in the history books

WITH one regular season game to play, Scottish Claymores wide receiver SCOTT McCREADY needs 8 more catches to tie the clubs single season receptions mark set by TE JAMES WHALEN in 2001.
And the English wide receiver is also set to make a mark in the NFLEL record books by becoming the first national player in league history to lead one of the major statistical categories outside of kicking.
London-born McCready, who won a Super Bowl ring as a member of the New England Patriots in 2001, has 58 receptions this season and leads his nearest rival by 12 catches (ADAM HERZING (San Francisco 49ers) and WILLIE QUINNIE (Atlanta Falcons), both of the Rhein Fire, have 46 receptions apiece).
While McCready has enjoyed personal success this season, his team has gone 2-7 to this point and that has left the wide receiver determined to go out on a high note against Cologne this weekend.
He says: I would gladly trade some of those receptions for a few more wins so well be going all out for victory against the Centurions.
Its nice to feel youre doing your job as a wide receiver and contributing to the team, but at the end of the day, its all about winning.
McCready spent the 2001 NFL season on the practice squad of the Patriots but injuries in 2002 affected his roster chances with the AFC East club. A successful 2004 season in NFL Europe has likely increased McCreadys chances of breaking back into the NFL.
He says: The most important thing for me this season was to stay healthy. If you have recurring injuries, thats like death in the NFL. I have shown I can stay healthy and make a lot of catches and that has been good for me in terms of getting back into the NFL.
It has been a frustrating season for us here in Scotland and we have not always been able to punch the ball into the end zone. As a member of the offense, I feel responsible for that and hopefully we can change that and go out on a high note when we play Cologne on Saturday afternoon.
McCready was named NFLEL National Player of Week 9 for his efforts against Berlin, marking the fourth time this season he has picked up the weekly prize.
Only one other player in league history has picked up four Player of the Week awards in the same season Rhein Fire kicker MANFRED BURGSMÜLLER won the prize in Weeks 1, 2, 5 and 9 of the 1997 campaign, his second in the NFL Europe League.

Admirals gunning for .500 in final week of 2004 season

ALTHOUGH they are already out of the World Bowl race, the Amsterdam Admirals have plenty to play for when they host the Rhein Fire on Sunday June 6 at the Amsterdam ArenA.
With victory over the Fire at the weekend, the Admirals will avoid extending their own league record for consecutive losing seasons (5 from 1999-2003).
With two wins in their last three games, the Admirals have moved into third place in the NFLEL standings and stand just one victory away from ending the season with a 5-5 record.
Head coach BART ANDRUS was pleased with his teams showing during a Week 9 defeat of the Cologne Centurions and is hoping for more of the same in the regular season finale.
He says: Id like our players to be as determined this week as they were last week and we want to finish strong in the league with victory over Rhein.
Andrus also has some areas in which he wishes to see his Admirals improve in their final game of 2004.
He explains: We would like to do a number of things this weekend. One, to continue to score more points and maybe score more touchdowns than we have in these past few games. Again, we would like to play solid defense and maybe score a special teams touchdown. Weve come close a couple of times before and it would be nice to get into the end zone on special teams.

JACK BICKNELL has more regular season wins than any other coach in NFL Europe (61). Took the Barcelona Dragons to four World Bowls (1991, 1997, 1999 and 2001) before joining the Claymores this season PETER VAAS served as an offensive assistant under Bicknell at the Barcelona Dragons from 1998 to 1999. Both teams will be heading into Week 10 looking for a victory to end the season on a high note The Claymores need a win to avoid tying for the worst record in franchise history (2-8 in 1995 and 1998). Cologne needs one more win to surpass the 3-win total of the 1999 Berlin Thunder the last single team expansion franchise in NFLEL history Both clubs have had problems with turnovers this season. Cologne has turned it over a league-high 23 times and rank sixth in NFLEL with a -10 turnover ratio. Won a World Bowl ring as offensive coordinator of the Rhein Fire in 2000 PETE KUHARCHEK is in his fourth season as head coach of the Fire and led his team to World Bowls in 2002 and 2003. Won World Bowl rings as defensive coordinator of the Fire in 1998 and 2000, while serving under then head coach Galen Hall.

GAME NOTES
The Admirals have the chance to end the season with an even record (5-5) with victory over the Rhein Fire on Sunday... The Admirals have posted losing records in each season since 1999-2003 and will be aiming to end a season at .500 or above for the first time since 1998 The Fire will post a losing record for the first time since they went 3-7 in the 1996 campaign They need a victory against the Admirals in Week 10 to avoid posting a 3-7 record, which would tie the worst mark in franchise history (see above) The Admirals have NFL Europes sixth-ranked defense but that same unit is the leagues best inside the red zone, allowing opponents to score on 50 percent of 26 trips into Amsterdams 20-yard line (8 touchdowns, 5 field goals) The Fire has struggled offensively this season, ranking fifth in NFL Europe. Rhein quarterbacks have been sacked a league-high 31 times and the running game has averaged just 3.4 yards per carry while ranking sixth in yards per game (87.9) Amsterdams defense has recorded 23 quarterback sacks (fourth in NFLEL) and grabbed 10 interceptions (third in NFLEL) Amsterdam is the only team apart from Berlin and Frankfurt not to have a negative turnover ratio. Amsterdam has converted a league-low 50.0 percent of field goals (12 of 24), while the Fire ranks fifth in that department having hit on 55.6 percent of their field goals (10 of 18) QB CHAD HUTCHINSON (Dallas Cowboys) threw touchdown passes to WR WILLIE QUINNIE (Atlanta Falcons) and WR SHOCKMAIN DAVIS (Green Bay Packers) in previous meeting between clubs this season, when Rhein recorded a 20-13 victory.
