12.29.09 - Worcester 5 - Manchester 2 -DCU Center

The Worcester Sharks opened up a 3-0 lead and never looked back in an impressive 5-2 win over the first place Manchester Monarchs at the DCU Center on Tuesday night. It was the third straight victory for the Sharks as they closed out their five game home stand 4-1-0-0. John McCarthy extended his point streak to five games (4-2-6) with his 6th goal of the season, Benn Ferriero added a goal and an assist, and Steven Zalewski scored twice (11th and 12th) as the Sharks won for the 11th time in their last 14 games.

12.31.09 - Worcester 3 - Portland 1 -Cumberland County Civic Center

The Worcester Sharks opened up a 2-0 lead and never looked back in a 3-1 victory over the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Thursday night. It was the fourth straight victory for the Sharks and their 20th win of the season. Logan Couture extended his point streak to seven games (3-8-11) and Dennis McCauley scored his first game winning goal of the season for Worcester. Alex Stalock picked up his AHL leading 18th win of the season as the Sharks won for the 12th time in their last 15 games.

1.2.10 - Worcester 5 - Lowell 2 -Tsongas Arena

Five different goal scorers and 40 saves by Alex Stalock led the Worcester Sharks to an impressive 5-2 victory over the Devils at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell on Saturday night. It was the fifth straight victory for the Sharks and their 21st win of the season as the Sharks grab 2nd place in the Atlantic Division. Logan Couture extended his point streak to eight games (4-9-13) and Dwight Helminen scored the game winning goal for Worcester. Alex Stalock picked up his AHL leading 19th win of the season with a season high 40 saves as the Sharks won for the 13th time in their last 16 games.

1.3.10 - Worcester 4 - Bridgeport 3 -DCU Center

T.J. Trevelyan had a goal and two assists to lead the Sharks to their 6th straight win in a 4-3 victory over the Sound Tigers on Sunday. Cory Quirk and Dwight Helminen each had a goal and an assist while Alex Stalock made 27 saves in net for Worcester. Benn Ferriero extended his point streak to EIGHT games (5-8-13) with a first period goal with Logan Couture adding the assist for a NINE game point streak (4-10-14). The Sharks improved to 3-0-0-1 vs. Bridgeport.

Sharks in the Atlantic:

The Sharks are currently swimming in 2nd place with 46 points (22-12-0-2) in the Atlantic Division through 36 games trailing the first place Manchester Monarchs by 4 points (Sharks have two games in hand). The Sharks lead the 3rd place Devils by one point and the 4th place Wolf Pack by three points. Worcester has a four point advantage over the 5th place Pirates (42 points) and a five point edge over the 6th place Sound Tigers (41 points). The Bruins have 37 points in 7th place while the Falcons sit in 8th place with 31 points to round out the eight team division in a very choppy Atlantic Division. The Sharks have played the fewest games in the division with two games fewer than the Monarchs and the Devils.

400 WINS!

*400 WINS!....With the 4-1 victory vs. Springfield on November 1st, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 400 win plateau.

*Worcester Sharks Head Coach Roy Sommer, who plays a major role in developing players for the San Jose Sharks, is currently the longest-tenured coach (12th season) in the American Hockey League. His current regular season record after the win is now: 415-389-54-58.

*In Coach Sommer's first AHL victory.... The Kentucky Thoroughblades defeated the Albany River Rats 6-4 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on October 17th 1998. Coincidentally, Assistant Coach David Cunniff recorded an assist as a member of the River Rats in the hockey game.

*Assistant Coach David Cunniff has joined Coach Sommer in 258 of the 415 victories (62%).

Shark Bites:

*Captains for the 2009-10 season: Captain Ryan Vesce (2nd year), Assistant Captains Derek Joslin (2nd year) and Mike Moore (1st year).... T.J. Trevelyan, Joe Callahan, Steven Zalewski, Frazer McLaren, and Dwight Helminen have also worn the "A" on their jerseys.

*From east to west..... The Sharks already have TEN players that heave seen action to both the AHL and NHL this season (McLaren, Zalewski, Vesce, Joslin, McGinn, Couture, Callahan, Ferriero, Mitchell, and Demers). The Sharks had 11 players accomplish that feat last season. Logan Couture, Ryan Vesce, Benn Ferriero, Jason Demers, and Frazer McLaren have each recorded their first NHL goals this season. Jason Demers, Jamie McGinn, and Torrey Mitchell are all currently (Jan 3) on recall to San Jose. The Worcester Sharks have had 40 CALL-UPS this season to San Jose.

*You always remember your first..... Dennis McCauley (10/10), John McCarthy (10/9), Brandon Mashinter (10/9), Logan Couture (10/10), and Dean Strong (10/30) have all scored their first professional regular season goals this season.

*Sharks have WON SIX in a ROW..... The Sharks have won a season high SIX straight games outscoring their opponents 27-12 and outshooting them 231-145.... The power play is 5-21 while the penalty kill is 16-21.

Mitch Versteeg played in his first career AHL game on Saturday after starting the year in Kalamazoo....Dan DaSilva picked up his first FIGHTING MAJOR penalty of the season mixing it up with James Sixsmith of the Sound Tigers on Sunday.... Dwight Helminen and Cory Quirk had their first multi point games of the season (1-1-2) vs. Bridgeport on Sunday... Dennis McCauley scored his first professional game winning goal on Thursday in Portland.

*Desjardins likes going FIRST... Andrew Desjardins leads the Sharks with SIX first goals this season... including the first strike just :34 seconds into the game in Lowell on Saturday.

*Point per game.... The Sharks have FOUR players averaging a point per game.... Couture (1.46pts per game), Benn Ferriero (1.17), Ryan Vesce (1.14), and Jamie McGinn (1.00).

*Tale of TWO power plays.... The Sharks boost the 2nd BEST PP in the AHL on the road with a 20.9% clip (14-67). However, the Sharks are 26th in the AHL at home scoring at a 11.5% clip (10-87)... overall, the Sharks are 19th in the AHL on the power play (15.6%).

*The MAGIC number is 3... The Sharks have scored three goals in a game 16 times this season (44% of games) and is 9-6-0-1 in those hockey games.... the Sharks have allowed two goals in 12 games this season (33%) and is 11-1-0-0 in those games.

*Need to score 1st... Worcester is 17-2-0-1 in 20 games they have scored the first goal of the game... the Sharks are just 5-10-0-1 when allowing the first goal.... The Sharks have scored the first goal in each of their last six games (6-0-0-0).

*All four years....Defenseman Derek Joslin is the only Sharks player to suit up in all four seasons in Worcester.... He is currently in San Jose.

*Can't score if you don't shoot.... The Sharks are 1st in the AHL with 36.06 shots per game.... Danny Groulx leads all AHL defensemen with 105 shots on goal... *Five for fighting...The Sharks have 33 fighting major penalties this season through 36 games...
