S KY S OX W ITHSTAND N ASHVILLE,
8-3 Woodruff's start and four-run eighth propel Sox past Sounds for second straight win
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.
- Brandon Woodruff threw six scoreless innings and the offense responded to multiple Nashville rallies as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox defeated the Sounds, 8-3, in front of 1,670 Monday night.
Woodruff (4-0,1.61) earned his fourth win in as many starts by throwing six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out five Sounds batters.
The right-hander threw first-pitch strikes to 15 of the 22 batters faced, and secured his shutout outing by getting out of a sixth- inning jam. Nashville loaded the bases with two outs on a pair of singles and a hit-by-pitch, but Woodruff forced Chris Parmelee to fly out to Lewis Brinson in center field to keep his scoreless outing intact.
The Sky Sox (12-5) broke the deadlock in the fourth inning. Brinson walked to lead off the inning and stole second base. After advancing on an Eric Sogard groundout, Ryan Cordell grounded out to shortstop Franklin Barreto to plate Brinson and give the left fielder his 13th RBI of the season and second in as many games against the Sounds.
Colorado Springs extended its lead one inning later. After Brett Phillips flared a broken-bat single to right field and Ivan De Jesus lined an opposite-field single through the second base gap, Nashville starter Daniel Gossett (0-2, 6.27) uncorked a wild pitch to score Phillips. During the same at-bat, Kyle Wren lined a two-out RBI triple to the right field corner, scoring De Jesus for the third run in two innings.
The Sounds (6-11) cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but the Sox responded immediately. Leading off the bottom of the seventh, Phillips launched a solo home run just to the right of the batter's eye for his team -leading fifth home run of 2017.
The Sounds made it a one-run game for the second straight inning in the eighth, but the hosts once again answered with a four- run inning. Sogard bounced a RBI double down the right field line, plating Kyle Wren, who singled off Ross Detwiler to lead off the frame. The Sox second baseman then came around to score on a pair of Simon Castro wild pitches. Three batters later, De Jesus lined a two-run double to the gap in left-centerfield, scoring Cordell and Phillips to give the hosts a five-run lead.
The eight-game homestand comes to a close Tuesday night, as the Sky Sox and Sounds play the fourth and final game of their second season series at 6:40 p.m. MT. Michael Blazek (0-0, 2.70) makes his second start in a week and third overall as a member of the Sky Sox against Nashville's Michael Brady (0 -1, 5.91). Tuesday also marks the second $2 Tuesday of the season, where tickets, parking and Coors products are all $2.
