Springdale, AR- The Northwest Arkansas Naturals used an exceptional pitching performance from Blake Wood and two home runs to take game one by the tally of 3-0 against their in-state rival Arkansas Travelers Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 4,870 at Arvest Ballpark.
On the mound for the Naturals was right-hander Blake Wood (1-0) who was making his second start for the Naturals since being called up from Advanced-A Wilmington. He pitched the first complete game in Naturals history, striking out a team-high ten batters and not walking anyone. Wood allowed only three hits, all of which were singles, and finished up his dominating effort in an efficient one hour and 57 minutes.
The Naturals (31-26) got on the board in the fourth inning, when Angel Sanchez hit his first home run of the season, a shot that landed in the left field bullpen. Mario Lisson added two insurance runs when he hit a two-run bomb in the seventh to put the game away at 3-0.
With tonight's shutout at the hands of the Naturals, the Arkansas Travelers (28-29) have gone 20 innings without scoring a run.
For the Travs, starting pitcher Dan Denham (4-5) picked up the loss. He lasted seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking one batter.
The Naturals will host game two of their four game series against the Travelers on Thursday night.
