Wood Racks Up Four Hits; Bostick Shines

August 25, 2006 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

Jason Wood collected a season-high four hits and pitcher Adam Bostick dazzled on the mound as well as at the plate, but it wasn't enough as the Albuquerque Isotopes (63-69) fell to the Round Rock Express (80-54) 3-1 Friday night at Dell Diamond. The loss is the ‘Topes fifth straight on their current road trip and ninth consecutive setback to their division-rivals from the Lone Star State.

For the third straight night against Round Rock, it was the Express jumping out to a lead first, this time with a run in the fourth scored with benefit of an Isotopes error. After Alan Zinter led off the frame with a double and Eric Bruntlett drew a one-out walk, Charlton Jimerson lined a hot shot to third that was knocked down by Wood, but the third baseman's throw to second attempting to force Bruntlett escaped Robert Andino, allowing Zinter to streak home on the throwing error to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

The Express got another unearned run in the fifth, when Joe McEwing singled with one out and immediately attempted a steal of second. Catcher Paul Hoover's throw to second bounced in the dirt and skittered into centerfield, allowing McEwing to scamper to third, from where he was cashed in by a bloop single by Brooks Conrad to give Round Rock a 2-0 lead.

Albuquerque dented the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when pitcher Bostick grounded a two-out single up the middle and came all the way around to score on a double by Eric Reed to give the ‘Topes their only run of the game and cut the lead to 2-1. Bostick, who had a base hit in his last start with the ‘Topes, went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and the team's only run scored.

The left-handed hurler's only mistake came in the seventh, when Conrad blasted a solo home run to left to give Round Rock a 3-1 advantage. Through seven outstanding innings, Bostick (1-1) allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits while walking two and striking out eight, but nevertheless suffered the loss, his first at the Triple-A level. Express starter Ezequiel Astacio (7-3) earned the victory after yielding one run on nine hits while walking four and fanning four. Roberto Giron (13) got the save after allowing just two hits in two scoreless frames to end the game.

Wood provided more offensive highlights with four hits in five trips, including a double in the losing cause, but was stranded four times as the Isotopes left 12 runners on base throughout the contest.

The Isotopes will face Round Rock for the fourth time in their five game series on Saturday behind right-hander Jeff Fulchino (3-10, 4.63), who will take on Express righty Matt Albers (2-0, 2.25) in a 6:05 PM start.

Albuquerque returns home for its final homestand on August 28 in an eight-game stretch that includes two fireworks shows and two Fan Appreciation celebrations. Tickets can be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, www.albuquerquebaseball.com, Ticketmaster outlets, or at www.ticketmaster.com. For more information, please call (505) 924-2255.
