Mohegan Wolves News Release

NEW LONDON, Conn. (March 5, 2003) - The Mohegan Wolves (arenafootball2) have been keeping a busy schedule this preseason. This past weekend was no different, as Wolves players and staff members made appearances all over the local area.

On Friday, Feb. 28, Wolves player David Bradford and members of the Lady Wolves dance team traveled to Bradford Elementary School (Bradford, RI) to be a part of the “Read Across America” program. “Read Across America” is an annual event, which celebrates the birthday of Dr. Seuss, an author who is famous for his use of words and wacky art in his children’s books. Bradford and the Lady Wolves read Dr. Seuss books such as “Green Eggs and Ham” to the children.

Later that same day, a number of Wolves staff members, including Vice President Angelo Mazzella, were among the crowd of over 100 football players and fans in attendance at a special auction/dinner held at the Colony Inn in New Haven, CT. Proceeds from the event went to help the United Way. Overall, tens of thousands of dollars were raised for the United Way cause. The Wolves did their part as well, donating a substantial prize package that was auctioned off in the final speed round of the night.

On Saturday, March 1, the Wolves took part in a special charity-bowling event that was also held to benefit the United Way. WCTY (97.7 FM) and the Wolves co-sponsored a bowling lane where of Mohegan players, coaches, Lady Wolves and a pair of lucky season ticket holders got the chance to bowl with NFL All-Pro Matt Birk of the Minnesota Vikings. The event, held at Cherry Hill Lanes in Branford, CT, also raised thousands of dollars for the United Way.

Other NFL stars in attendance at the United Way weekend events included New England Patriots guard Joe Andruzzi, Buffalo Bills punter Brian Moorman, Philadelphia Eagles kicker David Akers and San Francisco 49ers tight end Eric Johnson. Fans were invited to both events and took the opportunity to meet and greet their favorite players.

The weekend concluded on Sunday afternoon, March 2, with the Wolves holding an “AFL on NBC Viewing Party” at Coach’s Sports Bar & Grille in downtown Hartford. The party was open to all current season ticket holders and former New England Sea Wolves fans. Those guests in attendance enjoyed learning more about the sport of Arena Football and had a blast watching a live Arena Football game on NBC with the Wolves.

All the weekend events turned out to be an enormous success. The Wolves are proud to be making a positive impact in the community, and plan on getting involved in even more local events in the future.

Another special date on the Wolves upcoming community calendar is this Saturday’s Penguin Plunge (March 8). The Penguin Plunge is an annual event held at Ocean Beach in New London. All pledges donated on behalf of the icy divers benefit the Special Olympics, Eastern Region.

The Wolves will also be volunteering their time at the local New London soup kitchen on Thurs., March 13.
