Fort Worth Flyers News Release

FORT WORTH, Texas, February 20, 2007 - The Dakota Wizards outlasted the Flyers 111-99 in a mid-morning contest at the Fort Worth Convention Center to surge to first place in the Eastern Division.

In the first quarter, the Wizards took advantage of the Flyers' cold shooting to build a 34-21 lead. Dakota also took advantage of the Flyers' defense, shooting almost 60 percent from the field and scoring 18 points in the paint in the quarter. In the second quarter the Flyers defense came alive, holding the Wizards to 35 percent shooting and trimming the deficit to 10 points to give the visitors a 57-47 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter the Flyers came out strong and gradually chipped away at the Dakota lead. Guard Kevin Burleson nailed two free throws with five minutes remaining in the period to put the Flyers on top for the first time in the game, 60-59. The teams traded baskets throughout the remainder of the period, and the score was tied at 76 at the end of the period. The teams continued to battle in the fourth quarter, and Jeremy Richardson's jump shot at 9:12 tied the game at 84 apiece. However, led by 12 points from guard Chris McCray and 9 points from forward Quemont Greer in the final quarter, the Wizards were able to overcome the Flyers rally and earn the victory.

"Dakota played a smart game and set the tempo early," Flyers head coach Sidney Moncrief remarked. "Once we got going we played hard, but just like the last few games we have played we started slowly and had to work our way back into the game."

Moncrief cited team chemistry, lack of ball movement and poor shot selection as the primary cause of the Flyers' poor shooting.

"We've had several players come and go, and as we get more acquainted with one another then the shooting will improve. Also, we need to move the ball better and not take as many contested shots."

Moncrief stated that he was pleased with the team's overall effort and defense.

"I though we fought hard and really stepped it up defensively in the second half, especially in the third quarter," he said.

Pops Mensah-Bonsu led the Flyers with 22 points and 7 rebounds, and Kevin Burleson added 20 points and a game-high 8 assists. Guard Corey Santee came off the bench and scored 19 points, and Jeremy Richardson chipped in with 13. Terrance Thomas notched a double-double for the Flyers with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Greer led the Wizards with 27 points and 8 rebounds, and McCray added 19 points. Curtis Stinson also chipped in with 18 points.

The loss drops the Flyers to 18-12, and the Wizards improve to 19-11. The Flyers will travel to Austin and face the Toros on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Austin Convention Center, and the Wizards will visit the Colorado 14ers on February 26.
