BISMARCK, ND - Yet another big scoring night from Romel Beck propelled the Dakota Wizards to their 12th victory at the Bismarck Civic Center this season. Beck's 27 points on12-of-16 shooting keyed a 113-103 win over the Idaho Stampede in front of 3,776 fans on Saturday night. Despite being outrebounded 45-34, Dakota was able to pull away in part because of a great team shooting effort. The Wizards shot 57.7% for the game while holding the Stampede to 45.5% from the field.
Wizards head coach Rory White has been asking his team for a balanced attack, and Dakota responded with eight different Wizards scoring in the first quarter. Idaho, still trying to work out their rotation after having three players receive NBA call-ups, kept the game close in the first, even after shooting only 40% from the field in the frame. The period came to a close with Dakota leading 26-25.
The Wizards picked up their intensity on both ends of the floor in the second quarter. Dakota held the Stampede to 18 points in the second on 7-of-19 shooting. The Wizards were also able to score seemingly at will on the other end of the floor. David Bell, Renaldo Major and Curtis Withers all chipped in seven points apiece for Dakota in the period. As a team, the Wizards were 10-of-14 from the floor in the second period. Despite 14 first half points from Idaho's Andre Barrett, Dakota took a 58-43 lead after the half.
Barrett did everything he could to keep his team in the game in the second half, adding 17 more points for a game-high total of 31. Despite a solid effort on the boards, the Stampede's shooting woes simply made it impossible for them to cut into Dakota's lead. One night after watching his team cough up an 18 point lead, Beck ensured the same thing would not happen on Saturday. He hit 8-of-10 field goal attempts in the second half to help the Wizards notch the ten point win.
Beck wasn't the only Wizard to have a strong game. Major (20 points), Withers (17 points) and Bell (16 points) all contributed in a big way to the Dakota win. Along with Barrett's 31, Joe Dabbert also recorded a double-double with 20 points and eleven rebounds for Idaho.
The Wizards will welcome Bakersfield to Bismarck for a pair of games beginning on Tuesday while the Stampede will travel to Reno for two games with the Bighorns.
