Wisconsin Timber Rattlers vs. Cedar Rapids Kernels

September 1, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-1 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday has put the Midwest League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers on the verge of the postseason. Jordan Yamamoto struck out eleven over six scoreless innings to earn his seventh win of the season for Wisconsin.

The Timber Rattlers (69-67 overall, 35-31 second half) could not get anything going against Kernels starting pitcher Lachlan Wells. The Australian left-hander retired the first fifteen Wisconsin batters he faced.

Yamamoto pitched around three hits with eleven strikeouts over his six scoreless innings. The right-hander has struck out 152 hitters in 2016 and took over the Midwest League lead in strikeouts from Angel Perdomo of Lansing. Perdomo, who pitched last night, has 149 strikeouts this season. Yamamoto also matched Joel Pineiro and Ryan Anderson of the 1998 Timber Rattlers to tie that duo for sixth on the franchise single-season strikeout list. However, Yamamoto was in line for a no decision as he was done after six innings on Thursday night. That changed when the Rattlers bats got going.

Max McDowell started the bottom of the sixth with a single. Luis Aviles followed with a single. Wells, who also struck out eleven in the game, got Carlos Belonis swinging at a 3-2 pitch, but the runners were going. The throw to third was wild and McDowell scored without a play to give the Rattlers a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jake Gatewood got a second chance after a foul pop was dropped for an error and he doubled with one out. Lucas Erceg was next and his popup to third was dropped for another error. That ended the night for Wells.

Kernels reliever Williams Ramirez took over for Wells and hit Monte Harrison to load the bases. Then, Ramirez his McDowell to force in Gatewood for a 2-0 lead. Belonis delivered a two-out double to right to knock in Erceg and Harrison for a 4-0 lead.

Cedar Rapids (76-59, 40-26) got on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth inning with an unearned run against reliever Scott Grist. A throwing error by Grist allowed Rainis Silva to reach second at the start of the inning. Nelson Molina got Silva home with a two-out single and Wisconsin's lead was down to 4-1.

In the top of the ninth, Quintin Torres-Costa allowed a hit to Luis Arraez, who had two of the Kernels five hits on Thursday, but struck out the next two hitters. Miguel Sanchez took over for Torres-Costa and got the final out for his first Midwest League save.

In the second half Western Division Wild Card chase, the Burlington Bees lost 5-4 to the Clinton LumberKings. The Bees are now 33-33 in the second half and the Rattlers have a two game lead on the Bees for the Wild Card spot with four games remaining in the season. Wisconsin owns the tie-breaker of the Bees by virtue of winning the season series between the teams. Wisconsin's magic number over the Bees to clinch a playoff spot is two.

The final home game of the regular season is Friday night as the Rattlers face the Kernels in the final game of the series. Jordan Desguin (1-1, 2.70) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Cedar Rapids has named Tyler Beardsley (1-2, 3.43) as their starter. Game time is 6:35pm.
