Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers took control of their race for the playoffs with a 3-2 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Rattlers took the lead in the bottom of the first inning and held on to break the Kernels' eight-game winning streak.
Cedar Rapids (77-58 overall, 40-25 second half) grabbed the early lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Wisconsin starting pitcher Conor Harber retired the first two batters he faced. Then, Luis Arraez singled to center and a misplay allowed him to race around to third base. Jaylin Davis knocked in Arraez with a single and Cedar Rapids was up 1-0.
Wisconsin (68-67, 34-31) responded in the bottom of the first. Troy Stokes, Jr. moved his current hitting streak to twelve games with a one-out double. Jake Gatewood tied the game with a two-out RBI double to score Stokes. Lucas Erceg was next and he cracked a two-run homer to right to give the Rattlers a 3-1 lead.
Harber kept the Kernels off the scoreboard for the remainder of his night. He tossed a total of five innings, walked three and struck out five.
Cedar Rapids pulled to within a run in the top of the sixth inning. JJ Fernandez hit a two-out, solo home run off reliever Christian Trent and the Rattlers lead was down to 3-2.
In the top of the eighth inning, the first two Kernels reached base against Trent, but he retired the next two batters. Fernandez was due up and the Rattlers went to closer Nate Griep. Fernandez sent a hard grounder behind third on the first pitch he saw from Griep, but Erceg made a diving stop near the line and threw in time to first base for the final out of the inning with the Rattlers still up by a run.
Griep worked a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game for his 23rd save of the season.
The Timber Rattlers are 12-3 in one-run games in the month of August.
In the second half Western Division Wild Card race, the Timber Rattlers got help from the Clinton LumberKings, who defeated the Bees 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Quad Cities River Bandits were eliminated from playoff contention when they lost to the Kane County Cougars. The Bees are now 33-32 in the second half and trail the Rattlers by one game. Plus, the Rattlers own the tie-breaker over the Bees by virtue of winning the season series between the two teams. There are five games remaining in the season.
Game two of the series between Wisconsin and Cedar Rapids is scheduled for Thursday night. Jordan Yamamoto (6-8, 4.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Lachlan Wells (6-3, 1.94) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 7:05pm.
Gnaf, the evil twin of Timber Rattlers mascot Fang T. Rattler, was selected as the Fans' Choice bobblehead in a vote earlier this season and the first 1,000 fans to attend Thursday's game will receive a bobblehead of Gnaf courtesy of Pick 'n Save.
Fans of legal drinking age may enjoy 12-ounce craft beers for $2 on Craft Brews & Brats Thursday with 95.9 KISS-FM. Cher-Make brats are also just $2 and they are available for everyone.
