Winterhawks Knock off Seattle 5-2 Friday

December 1, 2012 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks (21-4-1-0) earned their 11th straight home win with a 5-2 victory over the visiting Seattle Thunderbirds (12-13-1-0) Friday at the Rose Garden in front of 6,671 fans.

The Hawks scored the lone goal of the first period at the 6:31 mark when Taylor Peters banged in a puck on the doorstep to make it 1-0.

Seattle tied the game at the 8:48 mark of the second period when Justin Hickman scored to make it 1-1. The Hawks regained the lead at the 13:20 mark when Oliver Bjorkstrand's shot from the left faceoff circle found the back of the net to make it 2-1, a score which stood through the end of the period.

The Hawks then began pulling away early in the third, beginning 19 seconds into the frame when Seth Jones followed Ty Rattie on a rush and put a rebound past Seattle netminder Brandon Glover to make it 3-1. Then at the 5:27 mark Taylor Leier beat Glover with a shot that went over his arm and just under the crossbar to make it 4-1.

Seattle got one back at the 12:08 mark on a goal by Roberts Lipsbergs to cut Portland's lead to 4-2, but with 1:47 to go and Glover on the bench for an extra attacker, Rattie scored into the empty net to give the Hawks the 5-2 win.

Rattie's goal and assist Friday gave him points in 19 of his last 20 games, including five straight multi-point games, with 16 goals and 23 assists for 39 points in that span.

With an assist, Leipsic extended his point streak to 14 games, with 12 goals and 21 assists for 33 points during his point streak.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow at 7 p.m. with a road contest in Everett against the Silvertips.
