Portland renews its rivalry with the Everett Silvertips Sunday afternoon at Angel of the Winds Arena. The Winterhawks (0-1-0-0) are looking to capture their first win against a 'Tips team that lost its first two games to the Vancouver Giants to start the season.

PREVIOUS GAME - Winterhawks 3 at Thunderbirds 5: Portland's comeback effort falls a little short against Seattle in the WHL season opener on Saturday night.

In the first period, the Seattle Thunderbirds leading scorer from a season ago, Nolan Volcan, scored his first of the season on the power play 11:11 into the frame. The Winterhawks responded with a power play goal of their own a few minutes later. Joachim Blichfeld got a warm welcome back to the Pacific Northwest with a clap bomb at the top of the right circle.

Seattle broke loose in the second, scoring three unanswered in the first 6:03 of the period. The Winterhawks came out ignited in the third and rode the momentum from rookie Seth Jarvis, who netted his first two Western Hockey League goals.

The Winterhawks were unable to complete the comeback as Seattle buried an empty net to seal it in 5-3 fashion.

TODAY'S OPPONENT:

The Silvertips (0-2-0-0) suffered a 3-1 loss to the Giants in their home opener Saturday night. On a ceremonial night where the team raised its 2017-18 Western Conference Championship banner, their night was spoiled by the boys from Langley.

Offensively, Everett has scored just two goals in two games and if history is any indication, today's match-up could very well be another defensive battle. Both the Silvertips (5-5-0-0) and Winterhawks (5-4-0-1) won five head-to-head meetings against one another a season ago. Everett led the league in fewest goals allowed, largely in part to two-time CHL Goaltender of the Year Carter Hart. With Hart graduating to the professional ranks, Head Coach Dennis Williams turns his attention to Dustin Wolf.

In two starts, the 2001 birth year Wolf made 46 saves on 50 shots against. Slovakian forward Martin Fasko-Rudas and Minnesota Wild product Connor Dewar are the only two Silvertips to score this season.

The Silvertips have yet to lead a game going into an intermission break this season, and they will be looking to get in a groove offensively against Portland. With Everett's top line from a season ago in Patrick Bajkov, Mike Fonteyne and Garrett Pilon gone, they are in need to a combo to replace that production up front. Dewar, Riley Sutter and Bryce Kindopp are a few of the veterans to keep an eye on as this season develops.
