Portland Winterhawks News Release

The Portland Winterhawks traveled to Vancouver and earned a 4-3 win Wednesday, their second victory over the Giants in three days after a 7-2 decision Monday night. The win improved the Winterhawks to 2-1-0-0, while Vancouver has now lost three in a row after a season-opening win.

The Giants opened the scoring 2:16 into the game on a goal by defenseman David Musil, the lone goal of the first period.

After Vancouver's early first period goal, Portland struck early and often in the second period. Brad Ross beat Giants netminder Mark Segal 1:42 into the frame to even the score at 1-1. Ross scored again less than three minutes later with his second goal of the game, and third in two games, to give the Winterhawks a 2-1 lead.

Portland extended the lead at the 7:54 mark, as Spencer Bennett scored his third of the season to give the Winterhawks a 3-1 edge, and the team continued applying the pressure as Ty Rattie scored his third of the season at the 10:59 mark on a power play to give Portland a 4-1 lead they'd take into the third period.

Vancouver got one back 10:52 into the third period with a power play goal from Neil Manning to cut Portland's lead to 4-2. Late in the game, the Winterhawks were assessed two penalties at once, and the Giants pulled their goaltender, giving Vancouver a six-on-three advantage for two minutes. The Giants took advantage with a goal by Brendan Gallagher with 34.5 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 4-3.

But that would be as close as the Giants would get, as the Winterhawks killed the remaining penalties and came away with the 4-3 win.

Keith Hamilton was once again solid in net, picking up the win with 36 saves on 39 Giants shots. Segal took the loss for the Giants, making 23 saves on 27 shots. The Winterhawks were 1-4 on the power play, and went 7-9 on the penalty kill.

The Winterhawks return to the ice Saturday at the Rose Garden in the team's 2010-11 Grand Opener. The first 7,500 fans will receive a free poster featuring the team's eight 2010 NHL Draft picks.
