Winterhawks Beat T-Birds on Teddy Bear Toss Night

KENT - Alex Schoenborn had a hat trick for the Portland Winterhawks Saturday night at ShoWare Center to lead his team to a 5-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Seattle (26-17-3-0) took a 1-0 lead with 47 seconds left in the first period with a power-play goal. Mathew Barzal passed the puck to Jerret Smith at the right point. Smith took a wrist shot as Scott Eansor skated through the low slot. Eansor tipped Smith's shot past Portland goalie Adin Hill for the teddy-bear goal.

After the goal fans threw teddy bears and other stuffed animals on the ice. The teddy bears and stuffed animals were collected by the WARM 106.9 Teddy Bear Patrol and will be given to police and fire departments who give them to children in times of emergency and crisis.

The teams left the ice after the teddy-bear goal and headed to the locker rooms. T-Birds staff cleaned up the bears and ran the Zambonis on the ice. The last 47 seconds of the first period were played just prior to the second period. The teams switched ends after the first period.

The T-Birds outshot the Winterhawks 15-10 in the first period.

Seattle struck on the power play at 7:45 of the second period to take a 2-0 lead. Ryan Gropp passed the puck from the right point to Alexander True on the goal line to the left of the net. True centered the puck to Keegan Kolesar in the slot Kolesar beat Hill low on the stick side for his 23rd goal of the season.

Portland (24-21-2-0) cut the T-Birds lead to one goal at 11:34 of the second on a goal from Alex Schoenborn. Keoni Texeira and Jack Dougherty had the assists.

The Winterhawks tied the game 2-2 at 17:36 of the second when Rodrigo Abols banged in a rebound from a Dougherty shot. Caleb Jones had the second assist.

The T-Birds had a 27-21 advantage in shots after two periods by outshooting the Winterhawks 12-11 in the period.

The Winterhawks scored three goals in the third period to get the 5-2 win. Schoenborn scored at 6:02 and 12:42, the second goal on the power play, of the period to make it a 4-2 Portland lead. Dominic Turgeon scored an empty-net goal at 19:20 of the third to seal the win.

Bow made 31 saves on 35 shots and his record is 15-16-4-0.

Hill had 39 saves on 41 shots and his record is now 22-17-2-0.

The T-Birds next game is Friday, January 29, at the Spokane Chiefs at 7:05pm.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2015-16 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 am to 5 pm Saturday game days at 10 am and Sunday game days at noon.
