Mississippi Braves News Release

One night after clinching the Southern League South's second-half championship, the M-Braves welcomed the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx to town. The M-Braves lineup was not a list of the usual suspects, but it didn't matter as the Braves shutout the D-Jaxx, 6-0.

Van Pope doubled and scored on a Jose Camarena single in the second to give the M-Braves a 1-0 lead. Mississippi quickly added three more runs in the third to go up, 4-0.

Jordan Schafer reached on a fielding error and stole second and third to move into scoring position. After Kala Ka'aihue walked, Greg Creek singled home Schafer. KK moved to third on the play and scored on a single by Willie Cabrera. Pope then reached on a fielding error and Creek came home to give the Braves a four-run lead.

Mississippi added two more runs in the fourth. Robert Marcial started the rally with a single and he came in to score after three consecutive M-Braves walked. With the bases loaded with Braves, Creek hit into a fielder's choice scoring Quentin Davis from third.

Johnny Venters threw five scoreless innings in only his third AA outing. He held the D-Jaxx off the scoreboard to earn his first AA win. Paul Bush threw two scoreless innings and Kevin Gunderson threw two scoreless innings to finish out the game.

Joe Woerman gave up six runs on six hits through four innings of work and fell to 1-3 on the year. Ramon Martinez threw two scoreless innings and Marwin Vega did the same.

Mississippi and West Tenn will play game two of this five-game series Friday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05. The Braves will send righty Jeff Lyman to the hill against West Tenn's Tracy Thorpe.

Friday night will be the first Fan Appreciation night during the game and the Braves will feature their Friday Night Fireworks Extravaganza after the game. The M-Braves will give away thousands of dollars worth of prizes all night long for Fan Appreciation Night.
