Winnipeg re-signs Jamie Stoddard

March 16, 2004 - Canadian Football League (CFL) - Winnipeg Blue Bombers News Release

WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today welcomed back a talented athlete by re-signing free agent wide receiver Jamie Stoddard.

Stoddard (6-0, 190, Alberta Â’99, DOB: Dec. 29, 1977 in Richmond, BC) is a top possession receiver who runs smart routes and takes hit after hit, yet still advances the ball downfield.

Entering his 5th CFL season with Winnipeg, the highly affable Stoddard has played in 66 career CFL games plus six playoff outings and one Grey Cup.

“Jamie is one of the most underrated Canadian receivers in the league,” said Brendan Taman, general manager & vice-president of football operations. “The last two years he has been our best receiver in the playoffs. He also has a strong supporter in Khari.”

THE CFL YEARS – 2003

Stoddard played in all 18 regular-season games plus the 2003 West Division Semifinal. He emerged as a leader on the receiving corps, making one impressive catch after another. He also took on additional duties by serving as the holder for Troy Westwood on special teams.

Stoddard finished the season with 27 catches for 401 yards and one touchdown. He added two special teams tackles and one defensive tackle to his totals.

THE CFL YEARS – 2002

Stoddard played in all of WinnipegÂ’s 18 regular-season games in 2002, plus the West Semifinal and West Final. He had 27 receptions for 387 yards and one touchdown.

THE CFL YEARS – 2001

Stoddard re-signed with the Blue Bombers, Mar. 8, 2002. He played in every Blue Bomber game in 2001, starting 14 of the clubÂ’s 18 regular-season contests as well as the East Division Final and the Grey Cup.

The 2001 season was a breakout year for the dangerous slotback. He made some big time catches and some big runs after catching the ball.

Stoddard recorded 34 catches for 526 yards and a 15.5-yard average in 2001. He added four touchdowns for the season.

Stoddard had the first 100-yard receiving game of his career early in 2001 against the Toronto Argonauts (Winnipeg @ Toronto, July 13, 2001). He hauled in five passes for 126 yards, including a career-long 68-yard reception early in the game.

The slithery slotback had the first multiple touchdown game of his young CFL career against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Winnipeg vs. Hamilton, Sept. 8, 2001). He first reached the end zone in the late 3rd Quarter when quarterback Khari Jones threaded a 7-yard pass to him. Jones then found Stoddard again in the 4th Quarter on a 25-yard TD connection.

All in all, Stoddard lived up to the expectations held by the Big Blue coaching staff in 2001. His potential to be a big contributor to the Blue Bombers remains great.

THE CFL YEARS – 2000

Stoddard began the 2000 season – his debut year in the league – on Winnipeg’s practice roster but his solid work ethic and steady improvement led to his regular insertion into the Big Blue’s game-day lineup.

Stoddard played in 12 games for the Blue Bombers in 2000 as well as the East Division Semifinal against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the East Division Final against the Montréal Alouettes.

He recorded his first CFL catch against the Calgary Stampeders (Winnipeg @ Calgary, Aug. 16, 2000) and made his first start in the league against the Edmonton Eskimos (Winnipeg vs. Edmonton, Nov. 3, 2000). His best effort statistically came against Hamilton (Winnipeg vs. Hamilton, Aug. 25, 2000) when he made four catches for 44 yards.

THE COLLEGE YEARS – ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS

Stoddard came to Winnipeg as a free agent after a stellar college career at the University of Alberta. When he wasnÂ’t terrorizing opposing defensive backs, he was winning awards and picking up honors.

Stoddard was a five-year force for the Golden Bears – taking home CIAU First- Team All-Canadian honors in his final season. Selected Alberta’s Most Valuable Player in 1999, he was also a nominee for the school’s Outstanding Male Athlete Award in both 1998 and 1999. He also won the school’s prestigious Jimmy Condon Scholarship.

While at Alberta, Stoddard played for CFL quarterbacking legend Tom Wilkinson, who led the Edmonton Eskimos to five Grey Cups.
