Winning Streak Snapped as 51s Even Series

July 24, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Reno Aces News Release

LAS VEGAS - The Reno Aces saw their seven-game winning streak snapped on Saturday night, dropping a 7-6 decision to the Las Vegas 51s at Cashman Field. Mitch Haniger (@M_Hanny19) blasted two home runs and recorded three RBI, but it wasn't enough as Las Vegas knotted the series at a game apiece.

The Aces (54-46) started fast, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Haniger's solo home run to center field. The visitors added to their lead with two runs on three hits during a two-out rally in the third. Haniger and David Peralta (@dperalta6) both singled to bring up Peter O'Brien, who laced a two-run double to center. In the home half, Las Vegas got a pair of one-out singles from pitcher Gabriel Ynoa and second baseman Dilson Herrera before a two-out walk set up a Johnny Monell grand slam to put the 51s ahead, 4-3.

Las Vegas (51-48) benefited from the home run again in the fourth, as Kevin Plawecki led off the frame with a solo shot to left that increased the 51s' lead to two. Matt Reynolds followed with a double, advancing to third on a one-out infield single by Herrera before Brandon Nimmo chased Aces starter John Omahen (@JohnnyOmahen) with an RBI base hit through the left side.

Reno cut the 51s' advantage to 6-4 in the sixth. Zach Borenstein hit a one-out single and advanced to third on Jack Reinheimer's (@Reinheimer_08) double before coming home on a productive groundout by Sean Jamieson (@SeanJay04). The Aces tied the game at six in the following frame, as Haniger followed a one-out walk to Ildemaro Vargas (@ildemaro_tigre) with his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to right. The blast marked the outfielder's sixth home run in his last eight games since July 16, and his 16th overall in 41 games with Reno.

The 51s regained the lead for good at 7-6 following the seventh-inning stretch. Herrera drew a leadoff walk, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt before scoring off a fielding error by Reinheimer on a hard-hit ball by Eric Campbell.

Haniger's two-homer game was his second of the year and the 11th by an Aces player, surpassing the 2011 team for the most in a single season in franchise history. O'Brien logged his 19th multi-RBI effort, which ranks second on the squad (Kyle Jensen - 21), and his 27th multi-hit game. Reinheimer went 2-for-4 to match his total from the recent eight-game homestand, when he batted just 2-for-21.

Three Aces relievers combined to allow just one unearned run in 4 2/3 innings in relief of Omahen, who gave up six earned runs on nine hits (two home runs) over 3 1/3 frames with one walk and two strikeouts. Steve Hathaway (@Mr_Hath) was the hard-luck loser, dropping to 1-2 on the season.

The Aces and 51s continue their four-game series with game three on Sunday. First pitch from Cashman Field is set for 7:05 p.m. PT. Reno will send right-hander Shelby Miller (1-0, 4.05) to the mound, while lefty Darin Gorski (3-1, 3.38) will pitch for Las Vegas.
