Wings Whiff in Loss to 'Riders

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders scored a pair of sixth inning runs to defeat the Red Wings 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field. Reliever Jonathan Holders struck out 11 straight Red Wings batters in the game.

With wild card leader Lehigh Valley winning Sunday afternoon, the Wings fell to 4.5 games behind the IronPigs in the wild card race.

The Wings sent their all-star lefty to the mound in Jason Wheeler. He worked around a two-out walk to keep the game scoreless heading to the bottom of the first.

Byron Buxton led off the bottom of the first with a single into center field, extending his hitting streak to eight games. Buxton then took second thanks to a throwing error on a pickoff attempt from RailRiders pitcher Bryan Mitchell. James Beresford drove in Buxton with his 14th double on the season giving the Wings a 1-0 lead.

The Red Wings set themselves up again in the second inning as Leo Reginatto reached base on a fielder's choice. That was followed up by a John Ryan Murphy single that put runners on first and third with one out in the frame. But for the second straight inning Mitchell danced out of danger with multiple strikeouts to keep it a one run game.

Adam Brett Walker extended his hitting streak to 14 games when he ripped a double into the right center gap. The streak of 13 games was already the longest for any Wings player this season, so this also extended the longest streak for any player this season. Mitchell struck out the side around the two-out double and had struck out seven Red Wings through three innings.

The RailRiders tied the score at one in the top of the fourth thanks to a homer from Chris Parmelee that just barely snuck over the right field fence into the Red Wings bullpen. Wheeler was able to settle down after the big fly by getting the next two batters to ground out.

After getting the first two outs of the fourth inning, the RailRiders made a pitching change. Mitchell was replaced by lefty Tyler Webb. Murphy was the first batter who faced Webb and laced a single, his second hit of the game, up the middle. Webb then struck out Buxton to end the fourth.

Mitchell ended his outing going 3.2 innings while allowing four hits, one run that was unearned and two walks while punching out eight. He finished with 84 pitches and 53 of them were for strikes.

Scranton/WB took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. The rally started with a leadoff single from Ben Gamel, he was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt. He came around to score on a two-out single from Parmelee. The rally didn't end there as Donovan Solano ripped a triple into the right center gap that pushed the lead to 3-1.

Walker ripped his second double of the afternoon down the left field line to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Daniel Palka followed that up with a single into right to set the Wings up with men on first and third with none out. That forced the RailRiders to make another pitching change, turning to Jonathan Holder. Holder struck out the first two men he faced, but on the second strikeout Palka stole second to put runners on second and third. Holder was able to get Murphy swinging to end the inning with the score still 3-1 in favor of Scranton/WB.

In the eighth inning the Red Wings turned to the bullpen. D.J. Baxendale took over for Wheeler, he worked a quick frame that ended with a nice double play that was started by Wilfredo Tovar.

Wheeler finished his afternoon tossing seven innings giving up six hits, three earned runs and two walks while striking out three. He threw a total of 91 pitches and 61 of them went for strikes.

The bottom of the eighth saw Holder strike out the Red Wings in order, making it nine batters faced and nine batters he had struck out. Holden added two more strikeouts in the ninth, giving him 11 straight strikeouts before Murphy's infield hit. A called third strike on Buxton ended the game and Holden's incredible pitching line: 4 inings pitched, 1 hit, and 12 strikeouts.

RailRiders pitchers racked up 22 strikeouts in the game. The Red Wings out-hit the RailRiders 8-7.
