Wings Topple Stingrays 7-3

North Charleston, SC -The South Carolina Stingrays (8-12-1-0) started the scoring early, but couldn't hold on as the Kalamazoo Wings (9-9-1-2) prevailed 7-3 Monday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Stingrays Captain Matt Scherer kick-started the scoring 34 seconds into the first period beating Wings goaltender Ryan Nie with a slap shot from center ice. Forward Dan Eves and defenseman Zach Jones earned assists. Wings forward Patrick Asselin tied the contest at 7:18 from center Darryl Lloyd.

Rays forward Rob Ricci made it 2-1 at 4:18 of the second period slipping a shot under the left arm of Nie from the right-wing post. Forward Pierre-Luc O'Brien received the lone assist. Kalamazoo tied the contest moments later as defenseman Mitch Versteeg slipped a shot over the left shoulder of Stingrays netminder Jared DeMichiel at 10:05 from the right-wing point. Center Kory Karlander and defenseman Joe Charlebois registered assists. The Wings took the lead at 17:24 as Asselin lit the lamp on the power play from Karlander and defenseman Sam Ftorek.

Wings forward Justin Taylor carried the scoring into the third period at 3:31 from forward Brian McGuirk. Stingrays center Nikita Kashirsky pulled the game within one at 4:16 from forward Justin Milo and defenseman Johann Kroll.

Kalamazoo buried the next three tallies to seal the victory. Karlander scored his ninth goal of the season on the power play at 15:32 from Ftorek. Ftorek added a tally of his own shorthanded and unassisted at 18:23. Forward Brady Leisenring completed the game scoring at 19:28 completing a 3-on-1 rush with forwards Jordan Fulton and Trent Daavettila.

DeMichiel suffered the loss stopping 17 of 24 Wings shots. Nie recorded his seventh win of the season kicking away 43 of 46 Stingrays chances. The Stingrays ended the night 0-for-3 on the power play while Kalamazoo finished 2-for-3.
