November 1, 2017 - American Association (AA) - Wichita Wingnuts
WICHITA, Kans. - The 2018 season got a little closer on Wednesday, as the Wichita Wingnuts announced their schedule and game times for the upcoming campaign.
The 11th season of Wingnuts baseball and the club's pursuit of an eighth consecutive division title will commence with a three-game home series against the Kansas City T-Bones, beginning on Friday, May 18. That set represents the first of four series against the now-division rival T-Bones, as the American Association transitions from three divisions to two. The Wingnuts will compete in the South Division, along with Kansas City, Cleburne, Lincoln, Sioux City, and Texas.
The Salina Stockade have been replaced by the expansion Chicago Dogs, who the Wingnuts visit July 30-August 2, and welcome into Lawrence-Dumont for the first time on August 17-19. All told, the regular season schedule features an even split of 50 home games and 50 road contests, culminating with a three-game home set against the Sioux City Explorers on September 1-3.
The Wingnuts face all 11 American Association clubs both at home and on the road in 2018, a departure from the schedule format in previous seasons. The Cleburne Railroaders are Wichita's most frequent opponent, appearing on the schedule 16 times over the course of four four-game series. The Wingnuts and Texas AirHogs match up on 13 occasions, part of 65 total games against fellow South Division opposition.
As is typically the case, the Wingnuts will contend with a lengthy road trip beginning in late July and lasting until the middle of August to accommodate the NBC World Series. This year's road swing begins in St. Paul on July 25, and wraps up with a four-game series against Cleburne on August 11. During the trip, Wichita goes 22 days between home games, returning on August 14 to face the Lincoln Saltdogs.
Other highlights on the schedule include a rematch of the 2016 and 2017 Championship Series on August 20-22, as the Winnipeg Goldeyes make their way to Wichita for the only time in 2018. The Wingnuts will also be at home on July 4 against Lincoln, one of 12 showdowns with last season's Central Division champions.
Standard start times for home games are 7:05 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1:05 p.m. on Sunday. Exceptions include a 5:05 start on Monday, May 28, a 6:05 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday, July 4, and an 11:05 start on Wednesday, July 11.
Spring training for the Wingnuts begins on Sunday, May 6, with a full schedule of exhibition games to be released at a later date.
