Wingnuts Upended by Late Gary Rally

Wichita Wingnuts News Release

GARY, Ind. - The Wichita Wingnuts held a 2-1 heading into the seventh, but a late rally by the Gary SouthShore RailCats gave the home team a 4-2 win Saturday night at U.S. Steel Yard.

Trailing 2-1 entering the seventh, Gary (44-42) opened the frame with back-to-back singles off of Tim Brown (8-3). A sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base, but a fielder's choice at the plate for the second out gave Wichita (52-33) a chance to get out of the inning with the lead in tact. However, an opposite field single by Colin Willis scored a pair to give the RailCats their first lead of the game.

In the eighth, the RailCats added an insurance run as a squeeze bunt by Alex Crosby with two down scored Chase Harris to make it a two-run margin.

In the ninth, Wichita put one on with one out to bring the tying run to the plate, but Santiago Rodriguez induced a double play ball to put a lid on the Wingnuts comeback efforts.

The Wingnuts grabbed their first lead of the series in the third. Leo Vargas collected the visitors first hit of the night with a one-out single, then scored when Christian Stringer doubled to make it 1-0.

Gary answered with a run in the home half, as a Reggie Wilson sacrifice fly tied it up at one apiece.

The visitors grabbed the lead once again in the fourth, as T.J. Mittelstaedt launched his 15th homer of the year off of Charle Rosario (9-3), tying Mittelstaedt with Brent Clevlen for the club lead in long balls.

The lead held up over the middle innings, as a couple of Gary threats were snuffed out thanks to double plays turned behind Brown, who lasted seven innings to earn his team-leading 11th quality start of the year.

The Wingnuts look to salvage the final game of their series with the RailCats Sunday afternoon at U.S. Steel Yard. Southpaw Todd Kibby (1-4, 6.30) will be on the mound for Wichita, while Gary will counter with righty Richard Castillo (5-6, 3.39). First pitch is set for 2:10, and the game can be heard on 1410 AM KGSO, as well as on TuneIn.
