March 25, 2013 - American Association (AA) - Wichita Wingnuts
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts are excited to announce their participation in a spring training game at Joe Becker Stadium in Joplin, MO on Sunday, May 12th.
The official announcement was made by Joplin City Manager Mark Rohr at a press conference on Friday afternoon. First pitch on May 12th is scheduled for 2:05 p.m., with the Wingnuts squaring off against division rival Kansas City.
"We are very excited for the opportunity to showcase two of the very good organizations within the American Association in the great city of Joplin, Missouri," said Wingnuts' General Manager Josh Robertson. "We hope that this will help start the movement to bring professional baseball back to Joplin."
Tickets are just $5 for adults and $3 for children (ages three to 12). With the game falling on Mother's Day, all mothers may enter the park for free with the accompaniment of a paid admission.
"Joe Becker Stadium is a great venue for baseball, and we're eager to have this event in this historic ballpark," said Rohr. "Professional baseball was a part of Joplin's history, and it can be part of our future too. We encourage fans of American's greatest pastime to come out for the day. We hope many repeat what the unofficial anthem to baseball says, 'Take me out to the ballgame', and families enjoy the day at Becker, as many have done for years."
Historic Joe Becker Stadium is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Built in 1913, the 2,000-seat ballpark was the home of Hall of Fame outfielder Mickey Mantle during his second year in professional baseball. 'The Mick' batted .383 for the Western Association's Joplin Miners in 1950. Today, the Stadium plays host to various local teams of all levels, including semi-pro, amateur, collegiate, and high school.
The Wingnuts will announce their complete spring training schedule in the near future. The first day of camp is set for May 4th.
The 2013 season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins Thursday, May 16th against the Kansas City T-Bones at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Prior to the game, a ceremony honoring the life of bench coach Brian Rose will take place.
