September 19, 2017 - American Association (AA) - Wichita Wingnuts News Release

WINNIPEG TAKES MARATHON AFFAIR TO EVEN SERIES

Winnipeg 4, Wichita 3 (F/17) Series Tied 2-2

W: Zack Dodson (1-0) L: Tyler Kane (0-1) S: None

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (September 18, 2017) - The Winnipeg Goldeyes got a walk-off double in the bottom of the 17th by David Rohm to knock off the Wichita Wingnuts 4-3 and send the Championship Series to a decisive fifth game Monday night at Shaw Park.

The Wingnuts held a 3-2 edge entering the ninth, and sent their closer Ryan Kussmaul to the hill to try and close it out. Wes Darvill started the frame with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Kussmaul struck out Andrew Sohn, he induced a ground ball to third that appeared to end the ballgame. However, the umpires called a balk, giving Winnipeg life, and moving Darvill to third. The Goldeyes took advantage of the opportunity, as Casey Turgeon tied the game with a double, sending the game into extra innings.

Both sides had numerous chances throughout extra frames, with a combined 12 runners stranded on base between the 10th and 16th innings, with seven of those runners left in scoring position. Wichita stranded a runner in scoring position in five straight innings from the 12th through the 16th.

For Winnipeg, the extra innings were covered by two of their starters from the regular season, as Mikey O'Brien worked six scoreless frames, and Zack Dodson (1-0) kept Wichita off the board over the final two.

On the Wingnuts side of things, Kussmaul bounced back to fire a scoreless 10th, and the trio of Josh Goossen-Brown, James Campbell, and Seth Harvey each posted a pair of zeroes to keep the game tied.

In the 17th, Turgeon led off with an infield single, then raced all the way around from first as Rohm doubled into the right field corner off of Tyler Kane (0-1). The Winnipeg win forces a decisive Game Five between the Wingnuts and the Goldeyes for the second straight season to determine the American Association Champion.

The Goldeyes struck with the first runs of the evening in the bottom of the second, as Sohn hit a two-run homer down the line in left. Wichita responded in the next half inning, as TJ Mittelstaedt singled with two outs to bring home the tying runs.

With the game still tied in the sixth, Wichita grabbed the lead. Brent Clevlen opened the inning with a base hit, then went all the way to third on a Matt Chavez single. Richard Prigatano followed with a sharp single back up the middle to put the Wingnuts in front, and chase Charle Rosario.

The Wingnuts and Goldeyes will now play a decisive Game Five to determine the 2017 American Association Champion Tuesday night at Shaw Park. Wichita has yet to announce their starting pitcher, while Winnipeg will give the ball to righty Edwin Carl (1-0, 2.00). First pitch is slated for 7:05, and the game will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn, and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
