WINGNUTS WALK OFF ON KC

Zack Cox launched a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth Wednesday, lifting the Wichita Wingnuts to a 7-6 comeback victory over the Kansas City T-Bones at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Kansas City jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first five runs of the night over their first four innings at the plate. Wichita began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth, as T.J. Mittelstaedt hit an inside-the-park home run for the second straight day, driving in three to cut the lead to two. The Wingnuts trimmed the advantage down to one in the next inning, as Christian Stringer brought Brennen Salgado in with a sacrifice fly. The T-Bones nudged the lead back to two in the sixth, plating an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Vladimir Frias. The Wingnuts closed the gap back to one in the seventh, as Brent Clevlen singled in a run to make it 6-5. Wichita put the tying run at third in the eighth, but were turned away. In the ninth, Stringer opened the frame with a single, bringing up Cox. The third baseman then launched a two-run shot to right, giving Wichita their fifth walk-off win of the year.

BULLPEN STEPS UP BIG

With starter Anthony Capra struggling yesterday, the Wingnuts bullpen was called upon in the fourth to try and keep Wichita in the game. The relief corps stepped up in a big way, as the quintet of Mike Devine, Luis Pardo, Chad Nading, Chase Johnson, and Frankie Reed combined to work five and a third innings without allowing an earned run. The trio of Nading, Johnson, and Reed retired the final seven T-Bones they faced in the ballgame, with Johnson and Reed each working perfect eighth and ninth frames, respectively. The Wichita bullpen has not allowed an earned run in this series against Kansas City through 11.1 innings of work in the first three games of the set.

T.J.'S POWER SURGE

T.J. Mittelstaedt has been enjoying a power surge lately, having racked up five extra-base hits over the last four games. He has homered in three of the last four, including inside-the-park homers two days in a row, and added a double and triple as well. This run has brought him up to 42 extra-bases hits for the season, second-most in the league.
