Windsor Mayor Francis Gives Spitfires Key to the City of Windsor

(Windsor) Yesterday afternoon, the Windsor Spitfires hosted a Memorial Cup Rally and Autograph Session at the WFCU Centre from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. The rally commenced with a special on-ice ceremony including Windsor Spitfire owners Bob Boughner, Warren Rychel and Peter Dobrich, Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis as well as the entire Windsor Spitfire team and hockey operations staff.

At the beginning of the on-ice ceremony, all participants were introduced individually as part of the opening proceedings. Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis then provided the Windsor Spitfires ownership group with a key to the City of Windsor for the team's championship performance. The on-ice events also included speeches from President and Head Coach Bob Boughner, Vice-President and General Manager Warren Rychel and by Spitfire players including Team Captain Harry Young, Wayne Gretzky 99 Award Playoff MVP Winner Taylor Hall, Andrew Engelage, Ben Shutron, Eric Wellwood, Ryan Ellis and Dale Mitchell.

Following the conclusion of the on-ice ceremonies, the team hosted a special autograph session and photo opportunity with the J. Ross Robertson OHL Championship Trophy, the Wayne Gretzky OHL Western Conference Championship Trophy and the Wayne Gretzky 99 Award for the Playoff's Most Valuable Player in the concourse of the WFCU Centre. All Spitfire players were also on hand to sign for hundreds of Spits fans. The Windsor Spitfires would like to thank the best fans in the OHL for the turnout and for the continuous support of the team.

The Spitfires will now travel to Rimouski, Quebec as the OHL representatives for the 2009 MasterCard Memorial Cup in Rimouski, Quebec starting next Saturday against the champions from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on Rogers Sportsnet (Cable 54 for Windsor viewers).
