San Antonio Missions News Release

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - One night after recording season highs in runs and hits the Arkansas Travelers were held to five singles, only one of which left the infield, in a 2-1 loss to the San Antonio Missions on Saturday night at Wolff Stadium. The starting pitchers for each club stole the show as both Trevor Reckling and Cesar Carrillo pitched seven effective innings but go no-decisions. Seth Johnston scored the winning run with two outs in the ninth inning when Coby Smith picked up Cedric Hunter's bloop single and threw wildly past third base attempting to nail Johnston.

With their winning streak snapped at four games, the Travs fall to 19-28 while the Missions even their season record at 24-24. Of the 48 games played by the Travs in 2009, 23 have been decided by one run with Arkansas falling to 8-15 in those contests.

Reckling scattered eight base hits over his seven innings walking just one while striking out five. He was touched by the Missions for just one run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by shortstop Lance Zawadzki.

Carrillo was a tad stronger limiting the Travs to four hits over seven innings with one walk, one hit batter and four strikeouts. Ben Johnson's sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth provided the only blemish on Carrillo's line.

Left hander Barret Browning replaced Reckling for the eighth inning and retired the side in order. Then after Missions righty Evan Scribner (3-1) recorded a perfect top of the ninth inning, Browning got two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth before walking Johnston. An attempted pickoff of Johnston resulted in a balk against Browning apparently moving the winning run to second base. After Travs manager Bobby Magallanes argued the call, the umpiring crew reversed their call and sent Johnston back to first base. Then when Hunter looped a flare that fell into shallow left-center, Johnson ran for third base as Smith came up throwing. The throw bounced through third baseman Wil Ortiz who got tangled up with Johnston. The error allowed Johnston to cross the plate with the game-ending run.

The errant throw put the finishing touches on a hot-and-cold night for Smith who was 2-for-4 and scored the Travs' only run. After collecting a single off Carrillo in the first inning Smith was picked off second base by former Traveler Michael Collins, now catching for the Missions. However Smith also lined a single off the pitcher's glove in the fourth for a leadoff single. A walk to Hank Conger moved Smith to second base and a sacrifice bunt by Mark Trumbo advanced him to third where he scored from when Johnson flied to centerfield giving the Travs a 1-0 lead.

Missions centerfielder Luis Durango hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth. Mike Baxter singled with one out to move him to second base, and a two-out single to right-center by Zawadzki scored him with the tying run.

After the fourth inning, the Travs bats quieted with only one base runner reaching second through the end of the game. Carrillo retired 10 of the final 12 batters he faced before handing the game to John Hudgins for a scoreless eighth inning.

Nate Sutton joined Smith as the only Travs to collect two base hits on the night, but the only base hit to the outfield belonged to right fielder Brenden Florence who was thrown out trying to stretch a single to left field to a double by Hunter in the second inning.
