Team announces coaching staff, Corey Wimberly takes over

The Lowell Spinners, short season affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, are proud to announce their coaching staff for the 2018 season. The Spinners would like to welcome Corey Wimberly as the team's new manager.

Wimberly takes over for Iggy Suarez, who went 80-71 in two seasons as the skipper. As a player, Wimberly appeared in 820 games in the minors as a member of the Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, and Minnesota Twins organizations. During his career, he stole at least 50 bases in a season three separate times, including 59 steals with the Tulsa Drillers in 2008. Wimberly played in multiples international leagues from 2014-2017 before beginning his coaching career in 2017. He most recently served as an assistant coach with the Greenville Drive, Boston's single-A affiliate, on their run to a South Atlantic League Championship. Suarez will head to Greenville to take over as manager.

Also joining the staff is pitching coach Nick Green. As a pitcher, Green played from 2004-2010 as a member of the Anaheim Angels and Milwaukee Brewers organizations. From 2011-2014, Green played independent ball before retiring after 2014 season to join the Red Sox farm system as a coach. He most recently served as an assistant coach with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox. Green takes over for Lance Carter, who spent the last three seasons as pitching coach and will serve the same role for the High-A Salem Red Sox in 2018.

Returning the staff is hitting coach Nate Spears for his second season with the team. As a player, Spears appeared in eight games over two seasons for the Red Sox. In his first season as the hitting coach, Lowell batted .231 as a team and ranked third in the league in triples (22).

Also returning to the staff is Joel Harris as the head athletic trainer. This will be Harris' third season in Lowell and second as the head trainer after serving as an assistant in 2016.

"We would like to welcome Corey and our entire staff our Spinners family." said general manager Shawn Smith. "Over the years Lowell has become a launching pad for both players and coaches on their path to the show and we are looking forward to the next generation of talent under Corey's lead."

Recently the Spinners and the Red Sox had announced an extension of their current player development contract through the 2020 season, continuing their affiliation with one another since the Spinners inception in 1996.

Baseball returns to Lowell on Monday, June 18th when the Spinners host the Staten Island Yankees for Opening Night. Group tickets and mini plans for the 2018 season are available now by visiting either lowellspinners.com or by calling the box office at (978) 459-1702.
