Will Allen Walks Connecticut Off

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (33-35) split a doubleheader with the Brooklyn Cyclones (32-39) by taking the second game of the doubleheader by the score of 2-1. Will Allen (1-3, RBI) delivered the game winner with two-outs in the seventh.

The Tigers fell behind in the second with Toller Boardman, making his Connecticut debut, on the mound. After a perfect first Boardman allowed a leadoff home run to designated hitter Jeff Diehl (HR 5) giving the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.

Boardman settled down after the homer and went the first six innings without allowing another run as he scattered four hits. He struck out five and walked just one.

Connecticut tied the game in the bottom half of the second against Cyclone starter Jose Celas. Designated hitter Shane Zeile struck out but reached on an error by the catcher and later came around to score on a two-out double from leftfielder Jacob Kapstein (1-2, BB, R) that evened the score.

The game remained the same until the Tigers were finally able to get to Brooklyn reliever Nico Blank in the seventh. With one-out Kapstein walked and moved to second on a base hit by second basemen Pat Mackenzie (2-3, BB). After a groundout moved both runners along it was Allen producing the game winner with a line drive to left.

Logan Longwith (1-0) in his Connecticut debut pitched a perfect seventh striking out the side for the win.

Celas went the first three for Brooklyn giving up just one hit and an unearned run. He also struck out three and walked three. Blank who took the loss went three and two thirds and allowed four hits and just the one run. On the night Blank struck out two and issued the costly walk that led to the winning run.

Connecticut will play the third game of a four game series tomorrow at home against the Brooklyn Cyclones. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
