Cape Breton Eagles News Release

MONCTON- A rookie netminder turned out to be the solution for the Moncton Wildcats to figure out the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

Dominik Tmej made his first QMJHL appearance on Friday night and would earn the shutout for the Wildcats in a 4-0 victory. Cape Breton's quality opportunities were limited and they were unable to solve the new Moncton goaltender. The Wildcats would get a spread out offense- at least a goal in each period, spread among four different goal scorers- en route to victory.

It was a somewhat tepid start to the game but the emotion picked up at the 8:11 minute mark when Drake Batherson gave Derek Dicaire a thunderous bodycheck. He was challenged by Kevin Klima in a fight that would see players land their share of shots. No team earned a power play on the sequence but shortly after Ty Fournier would take a roughing penalty and that would lead to the game's first goal.

Moncton captain Lane Cormier would open the scoring just before the halfway mark of the first period on the power play. Driving the net to the side of Kyle Jessiman, he made his way to the right side of the net and tapped in the feed from Cameron Askew to put the Cats up 1-0. There would be no further scoring in the first frame, but there would be more fireworks as Cape Breton's Yannik Bertrand dropped the gloves with William Bower.

Dicaire appeared to give the Cats a 2-0 lead in the opening three minutes with a backhand over Jessiman. The goal was overturned on an offside. But less than two minutes later, Wildcats rookie Mika Cyr would jump into the play, receive a drop pass and score the first goal of his QMJHL career to double the Moncton lead.

The first half of the next period would prove dangerous to the Screaming Eagles as well as the Klima twins connected for a goal at the 5:44 mark of the final frame, with Kevin pulling the trigger on a feed from Kelly. Cape Breton would outchance and outshoot Moncton in this last stretch- outshooting by a margin of 13-6.

Eagles coach Marc-André Dumont would take a chance in the final seven minutes to give his team a numbers advantage. Jeremy McKenna was sent to the box at the 13:23 mark and Dumont would lift Jessiman in favour of an extra attacker. With the play 6 on 4, Giovanni Fiore would get two shots on goal in an effort to extend his goal scoring streak but couldn't solve Timej. As the play continued after the Wildcats killed the penalty, and it was McKenna would hit the empty net from a sharp angle to conclude the evening's scoring.

Both teams missed players due to disciplinary measures from the QMJHL. Moncton's Manuel Wiederer served the full one game of his suspension while Cape Breton's Sacha Roy served the first game of five game suspension for two separate instances in Wednesday's game against Rouyn-Noranda.

Timej stopped all 31 shots for the shutout. Jessiman allowed three goals on 22 shots in addition to the empty netter.

It's now back to Centre 200 for the Eagles, where they are unbeaten in regulation in seven games, for another home stand. The first opponent is the Val-d'Or Foreurs featuring assistant coach Pascal Morency. The game goes on Sunday afternoon and puck drop is at 3 PM.
