Iowa Wild News Release
DES MOINES, IOWA - The Iowa Wild (10-8-2-0, 22 points) were defeated by the Milwaukee Admirals (11-8-0-0, 22 points) 4-2 Tuesday night, despite registering 20 more shots (42-22) than Milwaukee in the Central-Division battle.
With Milwaukee forward Mark Zengerle adding a goal and two assists, the Admirals came away with a road win in front of 3,509 fans at Wells Fargo Arena. Milwaukee goaltender Anders Lindback made 40 saves in the club's victory to earn his 11th win of the season, which leads the AHL.
In the loss, veteran forwards Cal O'Reilly and Kyle Rau each tallied a goal for Iowa.
Although Iowa outshot Milwaukee 15-5 in the first 20 minutes of play, the opening period ended with the Admirals leading the Wild 1-0. Forward Trevor Mingoia put Milwaukee on the board with his first goal of the season, his first in the AHL, at 11:33 of the period. On the play, Wild goaltender Steve Michalek (18 saves) skated behind the Iowa net to stop the puck, but it got away from him, and forward Mark Zengerle picked it up. Zengerle sent it to Mingoia in the low slot, who shot the puck into the open Iowa net for an even-strength goal. Defenseman Petter Granberg also added an assist on the goal.
Milwaukee converted on a power-play opportunity to extend its lead to 2-0 at 2:14 of the middle frame. On the play, Pierre-Cedric Labrie banked the puck off the end boards, and it bounced back to Zengerle, who tipped it past Michalek low glove side for his first goal of the year and second point of the night. Defenseman Frederic Allard also added an assist on the goal. Iowa capitalized off a power play at 7:10 of the period, cutting the deficit in half. Captain Cal O'Reilly carried the puck up the left side and snapped a shot from the circle, beating Lindback high short side. Pat Cannone and Alex Grant each helped make it a 2-1 game. With the assist Cannone has a three-game point streak. Twenty eight seconds later, defenseman Alexandre Carrier extended Milwaukee's lead to 3-1 when he beat Michalek glove side from the right-wing circle. The even-strength goal was assisted by defenseman Jimmy Oligny and Zengerle. Shots were again in favor of Iowa, 15-10.
Rau made it a 3-2 game with his sixth goal of the season at 8:54 of the third period. On the play, rookie defenseman Brennan Menell fired a shot from the point that deflected off Rau and past Lindback glove side. Sam Anas also added a helper on the even-strength goal. At 18:36 of the period, forward Bobby Butler sealed a 4-2 victory for Milwaukee with an empty-net goal. Shots were in favor of Iowa, 12-7 in the third frame.
Iowa went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Milwaukee went 1-for-5.
After road games in San Antonio and Texas, Iowa heads home to welcome the San Diego Gulls on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. for Star Wars Night, presented by Pop Culture Utopia and KGGO.
