DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Wild (6-6-2-0, 14 points) defeated the Cleveland Monsters (5-4-3-0, 13 points) 3-2 in the shootout in front of 4,441 fans Sunday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
After trailing by two, Iowa came back in the second period, scoring a set of goals to tie the game. After a scoreless third and overtime periods, Iowa forward Sam Anas recorded the eventual game-winner in the shootout.
The Wild have won three in a row for the first time this season, bringing their record back to .500.
Forward Landon Ferraro, as well as defenseman Zach Plamquist each scored their first goals of the season in the win over the team's division rival, and Wild goalie Niklas Svedberg made 26 saves.
Forward Sam Vigneault gave Cleveland a 1-0 lead when he opened the scoring during a delayed penalty at 8:29 of the first period. On the play, defenseman Brady Austin passed the puck from the left point to defenseman Dean Kukan at the top of the right-wing circle. Kukan shot the puck, and Vigneault tipped it in from the left side for his second goal of the year. The Monsters outshot the Wild 11-3 in the first 20 minutes of the game.
At 14:20 of the second period, Cleveland center Jordan Schroeder snapped a wrist shot from the low slot for his second goal of the season, extending his team's lead to 2-0. Defenseman Doyle Somerby set up Schroeder from the right-wing circle, and forward Paul Bittner also helped set up the former Iowa center's goal. Iowa cut the deficit in half at 17:42 of the middle frame off forward Landon Ferraro's first goal of the season. After accepting a pass from forward Colton Beck from behind the Cleveland net, Ferraro put the puck past Monsters goaltender Brad Thiessen (24 saves) low stick side for an even-strength goal. Sixty seven seconds later, defenseman Zach Palmquist tied the game at 2-2 with his first goal of the season. On the play, forward Chase Lang passed the puck up to Palmquist at the left point, who beat Thiessen on the stick side. Rookie forward Gerald Mayhew also added an assist on the goal.
