West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps took a tie score into the seventh inning, but a fielding error opened the door for the opposition in a 5-2 loss to the Bowling Green Hot Rods Tuesday night in front of 7,055 fans at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The Hot Rods opened the scoring in the fourth, when David Rodriguez blasted a two-run homer against Whitecaps starter Beau Burrows to take a 2-0 lead. The Texas native finished the contest having allowed just those two runs on three hits spanning six innings of work. The 'Caps scored single runs in the fourth and fifth on a sacrifice fly by Will Maddox, and a passed ball to score Leo Laffita to tie the game at two. In the seventh, Laffita sent a wild throw in an attempt to force out baserunner Kewby Meyer at third base. The error allowed Meyer to score and gave Bowling Green a 3-2 lead. Former Michigan Wolverines star infielder Jake Cronenworth followed with a line single down the right field line to score two more and extend the Hot Rods lead to 5-2.
Tyler Brashears (3-0) earned his third win by virtue of tossing a scoreless pair of innings, while Jordan Smith (4-5) suffered his fifth loss, and third in his last three appearances after allowing three runs (one earned) in three frames out of the bullpen. The Whitecaps drop their record to 40-33, and 1-5 in the second half. Bowling Green improves to 2-4 in the second portion of 2016, and 39-36 overall. Maddox led the Whitecaps offense by going 3-for-3 with an RBI in the contest.
